Summary
“What about ghosts?” Cas had asked.
Dean fixed him with a curious gaze. “Look, I’m only telling you this ‘cause I know you won’t toss me into the looney bin. I ain’t saying ghosts are real, but I’m not saying they ain’t.”
He proceeded to tell Cas about a church he had briefly attended with Sam, who hadn’t wanted to go alone, where he had felt something that he couldn’t explain or reason away. “Maybe it was a ghost,” he had said. “There was this priest who died there, folks liked to say that his spirit protected the church even in death.”
“But not angels?” Cas had asked.
Dean had almost laughed at that. “No. No angels.”
“Why?”
“‘Cause.” He turned away from Cas, towards the picture of Mary Winchester that sat on the mantle above the fireplace. “Last thing my mom ever said to me was ‘Angels are watching over you.’ They weren’t watching over her that night, and they’re not watching over me, or any of us, right now. ‘Sides,” he glanced back at Cas, “You’re my angel now. You’re the only one who can ‘watch over me.’ Otherwise it’s just creepy.”

Summary
“Look at all the pumpkins!” Jack practically shouts, pointing towards the pumpkins balanced carefully on the bales of hay lining the parking lot.
“I see them, Jack,” Castiel answers, the corner of his mouth curling upwards at his son’s antics. “Remember what we said, though.”
Jack nods. “Only two pumpkins. A baby pumpkin, and a grown-up pumpkin to carve.”
“That’s right. And when are we picking the pumpkins?”
“At the end,” Jack says, his hand slipping out of Castiel’s to tug at his sleeve, the sight of the little farmer’s market, the sounds of the chit-chatter and laughter spelling out a delightfully exhausting afternoon.

Summary
Cas sits on the low ottoman that doubles as storage, pencil in hand and sketchbook on his lap. He flips through it slowly, the creamy pages full of picture perfect drawings of Dean. His hands, fingers curled around a glass, his profile, dark and shadowy as he brings a bottle to his lips, his eye, bright and full of life. Cas turns to a blank page and sets pencil to paper.

Summary
“You’re warm,” he says softly.
He’s not sure why he’s surprised. He always half expects Cas to be cold, unnaturally so. Cause he’s not human. He’s cold, much more so than he realized. Cas is warm.
A smile tugs at the corner of Cas’s mouth. “It’s to be expected, I suppose.”
Dean frowns at him, confused.
“I’m a seraph, Dean.”

Summary
There’s a smaller altar on one side, opposite the confessionals on the other, where the majority of the candles burn. Slowly, Dean makes his way over to it, sitting down on the small pew in front of it.
Rows of vocational candles, most of them lit, line it. There are a few pots of flowers, probably a few days old as they look rather worse for wear. Above the small table is the focus of the whole arrangement.
It’s a painting. A woman, dressed in blue, holding a small child to her chest. Her hair is blonde, her eyes kind and blue, and god, she looks just like-

Summary
Cas washes the dishes slowly, hot water pleasantly tingly against his hands. Dean stands behind him, swaying in tandem with his husband as he works, arms wrapped around his waist, pressing the occasional kiss to the back of his neck.
The sun still streams through the winds, but it’s warm and comforting rather than irritating and unpleasant. Cas hums a tune Dean recognizes as Good Times Bad Times, his chin hooked over Cas’s shoulders, watching his deft fingers working efficiently.
He could lose himself in the moment, silence encapsulating everything. The quiet love, not spoken in words that both men struggle with, but spoken in the unspoken things. Homemade breakfasts and handmade dishware, coffee preferences and washed dishes.

Summary
“Ok, listen,” Cas says. “Let me explain.”
“Explain what, Cas?”
Cas sighs. “Don’t be mad, ok?”
That’s when he hears it. A soft, almost inaudible sound coming from the other side of the couch. It sounds almost like-
Dean stiffens, straining to make it out, not quite sure whether he’s just hearing things.
There it is again. Cas freezes, then looks away from Dean.
Meow.

Summary
All Dean knows is pain. An unbearable, unending pain that throbs in his face, in his stomach, in his fingers. Lucifer’s fingers thread through his hair, jerking his head back roughly. He uses Dean’s hair as a way to keep him steady as he rains down blows on him.
Cas, please.
They’ve been here before, he thinks blearily, knees aching and pain radiating through every cell in his body. They always end up here. Why do they always end up here?
“Cas, please,” he whispers.
A feral grin splits the face no longer even recognizable as Cas. “Cas is gone,” Lucifer says, mirth seeping into the edges of his words, making Dean nauseous. “‘Fraid I’m all you’ve got.”
Dean coughs, a mixture of blood and spit spilling out of his mouth.

Summary
“I was one of the few angels allowed to assist in their creation,” Cas says, voice equal parts fondness and bitterness. “Humans describe stars as being born, dust clouds sucked together, plasma and hydrogen and helium, to simplify something unable to be simplified. It’s as close to the truth as they can get. The creation process, the ‘birthing plan’ of a star, so to speak, is etched into my very being, though there are no words in any language ever spoken to describe it. The concepts are unable to be comprehended by the simplicity of the human mind.”

Summary
It occurs to him that, as far as he knows, there is no Death. Billie is gone, taken along with-
There shouldn’t be any reason for a Reaper to have been killed in the months since, so, theoretically, there should be no Death. Which means he shouldn’t be here. He shouldn’t be here regardless. He died. Now, after that, it’s either Heaven or Hell. He doesn’t particularly care which, given that neither will have-
Dean swallows, his mouth dry and throat burning. Neither will have him.
He hears soft footsteps behind him. He turns slowly, and his gaze falls on one of the last people he ever expected to see again. His mouth opens, a silent question hanging on his lips.

Summary
The evening air is cool on Dean’s perpetually rage-flushed skin. Cas is a solid, welcome presence behind him, where he’s leaning against the older man’s chest, seated comfortably in the space between his spread legs.
The lyre is familiar in his tired hands, fingers mindlessly plucking out a melody he can’t quite name. His eyes are closed as he revels in the closeness, the rareness of this particular type of intimacy making him treasure each moment. In nine years of mostly constant war, there isn’t usually a lot of down time for anything more intimate than a quick fuck or a one-off day of uninterrupted relaxation.
Nine fucking years, Dean thinks bitterly. Nine years wasted, nine years spent on this godforsaken beach, fighting what seems like an endless war.

Summary
“Shit,” he breathes.
“Shit,” Sam echoes. “She Freaky Friday’d us.”
“What?” Dean asks, trying to keep the note of panic out of his voice.
Sam shakes his head. Shakes Dean’s head? “Body swap movie? Jamie Lee Curtis?” At Dean’s blank stare, he shakes his head. “Whatever. Doesn’t matter.”
This is fucking freaky. Dean feels like he’s having an out of body experience as he stares at his body, with Sam inside it. Technically, it is an out of body experience, he supposes. “What now?”

Summary
On the bottom edge of the napkin is a phone number. That’s weird, it’s almost the same as his. Wait. “Charlie,” he mutters through gritted teeth, “why is my number on the fucking napkin?”
“So you can give it to Sex Hair when he comes in this morning.”
Dean balls up the napkin, tossing it in the nearby trash can. “I’m not giving him my number. Also, stop calling him that.”
