This series was written long before Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian language and Russian culture is treated with a fondness here that I would no longer portray in any sort of writing. I like so many of my companions in the Slavic languages chose to believe most of the horrors Russia inflicted on their subject populations were a reflection of successive brutal governments. I am no longer so kind in my assessment.
