“He’ll always be disappointed in me. He wanted another son like you, Darius, and I just can’t be you. I’ll never be good enough for him.”
“That isn’t true.” His voice had taken on a firmness I didn’t hear from him often. He was rarely ever serious with me, even when I upset him. “He’s just stressed. Running a kingdom is hard work, you know.”

“Are you sure I can’t punch Victor? I don’t think I want to ‘be the larger person’ or whatever you said.”
“Bigger person.” I smiled. “And no, you can’t. This can be a lesson in solving problems in new ways. You can defeat him with your speed and quick wit,” I suggested.

King Eckbert's words rang in my ears. And for the sake of all things sacred, Jaron, stay away from the castle until I call for you. If even one servant recognizes you, this whole thing is over.
I knew the risks. Unfortunately, I missed my mother too much to care. And luckily for us all, I knew how to make myself disappear.

Why did I have to sleep? Better yet—why did I have to dream? Maybe Tobias had something that could keep me from dreaming. I would have to ask him in the morning. I could go now, of course, but at this hour Tobias may be more keen on poisoning me than curing me of my nightmares.

Summary
He didn’t react as he studied my face. After a moment, he approached the counter and grabbed a discarded rag, dipping it into a tub of clean water for tomorrow’s dishes. I stood still in the middle of the room and closed my eyes as he silently dabbed the cold cloth on my aching cheek.
When he finished, he stepped back and I blinked unshed tears from my lashes. I had seen Mott angry at the other servants and I had seen him disappointed, but he only appeared concerned when it came to me.
Finally, he sighed. “What am I going to do with you, girl?”

"What does it feel like?" He asked, curled up at his mother's side while she played absentmindedly with his hair, humming a lullaby. "Being in love?"

This prompted Imogen to grin, eyes sharp. "Oh, Jaron, set aside your pride for two seconds and admit the plan is good. It won't kill you to accept some help every once in a while."
As a matter of fact, it very likely would. But whether it was the truth in her words, or the way she said them, or the simple fact that it was Imogen, Jaron's entire posture relaxed. The taunt slipped from his expression and he fixed her with the dopiest smile Mott had ever seen.

Summary
I could have gone to Mott or Roden, even Amarinda, Harlowe, or Tobias himself. Any one of them would have loved it if I opened up to them. But Amarinda had a lot on her hands with a newborn keeping her up at night. Mott and Harlowe had dealt with enough stress from me for a lifetime, and I didn’t need to give them another reason to worry about me when they were busy trying to help me run the country. And no matter how close we got or how many times they saved my life, I never wanted Roden or Tobias to see me as weak again. They’d seen me at my worst—even caused my worst, in Roden’s case—and I couldn’t let myself get to that point around them again.
If I was a stronger man, I would have already. Someone better wouldn’t have let it get this bad. But I wasn’t strong enough, or good enough. I would continue to fight against the waves threatening to drown me until one day, they’d succeed in pulling me under.

“I’m okay,” she whispered. Her voice came out raspy like she’d spent the night screaming.
Frowning, Jaron set the tray on the edge of their bed and crossed over to her. He pressed their foreheads together, hand resting on the back of her neck. She shivered at the coolness of his palm. “Your skin is burning,” he murmured, his voice a soothing balm on her budding headache. “Why don’t you lie down?”

Summary
“It’s cold,” Roden groused, hugging his arms close to his chest. “Why are we doing this again?”
I bent over and scooped a ball of snow. “Fink wanted to make snowmen, so we’re making snowmen. And nobody said you had to be out here, Roden.” When he turned to snap a response, I threw the snowball at him.
