Summary
Dear Rúmil,
I do believe I have finally done it.
I hesitate to call this my life’s work, because I do not yet again want my life marked by these things of fear. But these forces have marred me. They have touched every single person in my father’s line, they have latched themselves to each of my sons in a vice so strong nothing I can do can release them. There are fourteen of them, one for each of Ilúvatar’s emissaries, and I cannot see that as a coincidence.
I quite like calling them the Dread Powers.
(Or, how this whole shebang works - a guide in the form of a letter from Fëanor.)

Summary
There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and it took the form of fear itself, vast and formless and primal, unknowable and yet containing an instinctual terror. It made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, for in its mind they were holy, and they were the off-spring of its thoughts, and before the sightless seeing eye of Eru they came into their own, standing at its side before aught else was made, great forms of writhing dread.
(Or, the Ainulindalë and Valaquenta, as an eldritch horror story.)

It ends with his hammer raised above his head and his most beautiful creations cowering at his feet.

Summary
There are enough monsters in the untamed wilds of Middle-earth to hunt for millennia to come, but over time the same kind of chase grows dull. He longs for something more. Something like him, or almost like him, something with intelligence that will look at him with genuine understanding of what they will lose when the spear hits.

Summary
His sons are all born marked, and Fëanor takes it in stride. He encourages their growth and trains their preternatural abilities and does his best to mitigate the fallout, and in the end he is proud of all of them. They are strong in more ways than he had ever hoped for.
They are also, at times, rather terrifying.
