He brushed from root to tip, starting to gather up the hair with his left hand. Ling let out a sigh and a deep sound from the back of his throat.
“Uh," Ed stammered, his heart suddenly beating down in his belly.
“No, go on, go on," said Ling. “It feels good.”
Or: Somehow, it became routine for Ed to do Ling"s ponytail up every few days.

Summary
Ling thought back to when he’d suggested that drums would suit Ed better and couldn’t for the life of him explain why he had ever thought it. He wasn’t a life-changing, world-turner performer, but it was clear that he’d grown knowing this instrument, like he’d grown knowing alchemy.
Ling pays a visit to Ed for the summer solstice in Resembool, where Ed is playing folk for the performance of traditional dances of his hometown, all the while struggling to come to terms with when to move on.

Ling blinked and reread the notification, feeling his view of Edward Elric warp around this revelation. He looked up at Ed and his throat suddenly felt parched.
Ed hadn’t said anything. Even though he obviously would have benefitted from one of his closest friends being a native speaker of Xingese, he hadn’t even mentioned that he had been studying the language for at least three months, if his Duolingo streak was to be taken as a metric.
His eyes flickered down to the notification and then back up at Ed. He probably had kept it a secret for a reason and Ling’s heart burned with the possibility of why.
Or: Ling"s pining goes off the roof when he finds out that Ed has been learning Xingese in secret.
