In the morning before they leave for the exchange, Ngai Wing-hau stops Law by the kitchen door. Ostensibly he wants them to eat together, but he leaves his bowl of rice cooling on the side instead. He lays out the parts of his pistol. Then, despite Law’s interjection, Ah Hau cleans and reassembles it by himself.
“If I gave you a chance today,” Wing-hau says, going to the sink. Tap water splashes and he starts rubbing the gun oil from his nails. The loaded pistol is on the table between them. “Would you take it?”
