After the Flame Alchemist loses two limbs in an 'accident' not long into the conflict in Ishval, he ends up in the care of an automail engineer in Resembool. Unfortunately for Roy, it's not long before the Rockbells' daughter lets slip his secret to two bothersome brothers with a borderline obsessive interest in alchemy.
