Summary
The first time Martin officially met Jonathan Sims, he gave a cheery “hello!” at the sight of him climbing onto the fire escape through the window, and Jon, startled, met his eyes and beamed a nightmare directly into Martin’s brain.
It hadn’t been exactly what Martin had hoped for.

Summary
Martin pressed his hands against his face, suppressing an undignified noise of frustration. He hadn’t slept in days with that incessant knocking. Honestly, he’d prefer at this point if Prentiss would finally knock the door down and just fill him with holes already.
“Don’t you have anything better to do?!” Martin asked, glaring at the door.
The knocking, for a moment, stopped. “Not really,” he heard, a faint rattle of a voice through the door. “Next attempt at world domination isn’t scheduled for another month yet.”

Summary
“Hey,” Martin said softly, swallowing around the lump in his throat. “How are you feeling?”
Jon blinked at him owlishly, his pupils huge. The swathes of white bandages wrapped around his head couldn’t tame the wild fan of his hair underneath. He looked far too thin in the hospital gown.
He let out a sound like a giggle, such an uncharacteristic sound it threw Martin for a loop. “You know,” Jon slurred, “I know someone who looks just like you. His name is Martin. Do you know him?"
Martin blinked down at him, then huffed a laugh, “Jon, I’m--”
“I love Martin,” Jon proclaimed happily, with a goofy little smile.

Summary
Martin eyed a particularly suspicious cloud of fog that hovered at his right. “I’m handing in my resignation as soon as I get access to a computer,” he told it flatly.
The fog, for a moment, hung in the air, decidedly silent. Then it said, petulantly, “you won’t.”
“I will,” Martin said back. “First sheet of paper I find, I’ll get it in writing. Hell, I’ll inscribe it in the damn sand for you here and now--”
“You don’t get to quit until I decide to fire you,” the fog said, bristling.
Martin rolled his eyes, propping himself up on an elbow to glare at the fog. “Peter, for the last time, I am not spying on you for Elias!"

Summary
It’s date night, and Jon is eager for it to be a lovely night.
A shame his nosey boss has found out he’s seeing someone.
Surely this will have no lasting repercussions on the evening.

Summary
“You’re using me as bait?” Martin asked, horrified.
Annabelle’s mouth pursed into something rueful. “It does sound very crude when you put it like that. But you must understand, Martin, there is nothing he cares for more than you. And...I need to see what he is capable of when what he cares for is...jeopardized. I need to see what he will do.”

Summary
When Jon stepped out onto the roof of the building, the wind whipping at him, the force of Martin’s mingled terror and relief was like a physical blow to his skull. It was Annabelle’s name that fell from Jon’s mouth first, like a curse, like something rotten and spindly crawling from his lips. He could feel how terrified Martin was, the sharpness of it digging at the curvature of his skull, and he hated her for it. He wanted to make her feel it instead.
He wanted her to feel as though it was as much the end of the world as he felt when she smiled and cut the strand tethering Martin to anything solid.

Summary
When Martin closed the bedroom door behind him and saw the tablecloth--too nice of a thing for them to have owned before that night--and the unlit candles, he did hesitate, doing some mental math. It wasn’t their anniversary, which he knew by heart. It wasn’t anywhere near Valentine’s Day. Could it be...the promotion? It wasn’t much, but Peter had been mildly guilty about Martin almost dying “on the clock” (and Martin hadn’t bothered to tell him that being begrudgingly on-call to switch on Peter's late night programs wasn’t really “on the clock”), and in recompense he’d upped Martin’s salary a bit.
Of course, Martin thought, shaking his head slightly and turning his attention from the table, that must have been it. What else was there to make such a fuss about?
If everything went well, he’d be back before Jon even noticed he was gone.

Summary
Martin stared at Elias, then at the spiraling dark cloud in the distance, congregating at a point that seemed very close now. “Where is he?” Martin asked breathlessly.
“Where else,” Elias answered, squinting up at him, “but the building with the magically enhanced view of literally everything? Your boyfriend’s in the Panopticon.” Elias sniffed. “Made it impossible to finish my damn spreadsheet.”

Summary
“You haven’t forgotten anything, love.”
Martin glanced back at Jon, and asked, “how are you so calm?”
Jon blinked up at him, sat back, closed his book, and seemed to genuinely ponder it for a moment. “Well,” he finally said, “I already nearly ended the world, Martin. I hardly think this Saturday evening will bring anything worse.”
