Summary
Mare shrinks into the stiff pillows, fighting back the tears even as they well up in her eyes. “I fucked up, Chief. I did, no way around it.”
“Yeah. You did.” It’s barely noticeable, but Carter softens. “The most important thing is you found those girls.”
Mare drops her head to the side and stares off at the window. She can’t bring herself to look at him. “And got one of our own killed while doing it.”
Carter is quiet for a beat too long. Mare forces herself to meet his eyes and waits.
“Mare.”
“I brought him to that house knowing damn well I wasn’t armed and if things went south-”
“Zabel’s alive.”
Mare sits up too fast. Her head spins.
“What?”

“If it’s too hard to fight, if you can’t anymore, it’s OK,” she says. “It is. It really is. But if there’s any chance, if you think you can come back? Do it. Because do you know what else is overrated? Dying a hero. Or a martyr. Or whatever you want to call it. There’s so much more ahead of you if you can just stick around.”

Summary
“Anyway, turns out I’m not a sex-on-the-first-date kind of girl. I don’t know how you just ran around spreading your legs for half of Easttown after your divorce, Mare.”
Mare scoffs and gives her a bewildered smile at the same time Colin, lifting his Yuengling to his lips, misses his mouth entirely and spills half of it down the front of his shirt.
Great, Mare thinks while Lori chatters on and Colin tries his hardest to pretend he wasn’t listening as he grabs a handful of napkins off of the coffee table and dabs the beer out of his shirt. So this is about to be a thing.
