Catra’s exhaustion began to fall away in sheets as she walked up the first flight of stairs, then down the hall and finally to the door home. Her hearing could pick up the hints of crying, but she couldn't make out where it was coming from. She trusted that if Adora had felt shitty, they would have texted her. A smile spread across her face as she pulled on the door hand, pulling her bag a little higher on her shoulder as she pushed open the door, expecting to see Adora's big, dorky smile.
Instead, she heard crying.

Summary
The words sting to hear, even if they’re true. They haven’t talked about their foster mom since her services, the wounds they gave each other that week still too painful to do anything more than help each other bandage. Adora pulls their hand from Catra’s grasp, fingers wrapping around their own forearm instead. They let the pad of their thumb trace the six month old scars, feeling the rise and fall of the teeth-shaped carvings. They only recently faded enough for them to feel comfortable wearing short sleeves.
“Yeah, you’re right. I’m going to get dressed.”
“Okay, I love you.”
The habitual response to that call dies on Adora’s tongue. They can’t look at Catra right now, can’t even be around her. The ghosts of arguments echo in their mind, filling the silence as Adora marches back to their bedroom and away from the memories of the day Sharon Weaver died.
