Summary
“You’re only saying that because you’re in love with me,” he accuses, because he’s blind, but he’s not that blind.
He suspected for a while now, and while under different circumstances this would be everything Jiang Cheng wants, right now it only serves to make him feel worse.
“No,” Nie Mingjue says and Jiang Cheng laughs in his face.
“Please, I have seen you look, of course you are,” he confidently says, but Nie Mingjue continues to shake his head before he shrugs.
“Of course I’m in love with you, but that’s not the reason I’m saying it. I’m saying you should break up with him because I’m your friend and he doesn’t make you happy. He doesn’t even love you like he should and all it does is make you unhappy. I know you know he’s the literal scum of this world, so I don’t understand why you won’t break up with him.”
“You just want to see me happy, huh?” Jiang Cheng muses and chooses to ignore the fluttering in his chest.

Summary
Nie Mingjue continues to vanish at all times of the day for the next two weeks and while Jiang Cheng is not worried because he trusts Nie Mingjue he can’t deny that he’s burning with curiosity. Jiang Cheng still has no clue where Nie Mingjue vanishes to or what he does when he’s gone, but he comes back increasingly upset and Jiang Cheng just wishes he’d let him help.
That is, until he receives a gift.

“Are you alright?” Nie Huaisang asks, putting his blessedly cool hands over Jiang Cheng’s eyes and it’s chasing away the headache he didn’t even notice yet.
“No,” Jiang Cheng admits. “It’s just one of those days.”
“Where you’re trying to figure out what you’re waiting for?”
“Yes,” he agrees. “I mean—why am I still here? I get why you’re still here, but why me? I have everyone back and they are all happy, without any drama in their lives and I just don’t get it,” he rambles and Nie Huaisang makes an understanding noise but it’s not like he has an answer for Jiang Cheng either.
Neither of them know what Jiang Cheng is waiting for.

Summary
Nie Mingjue touches down a few feet away from Jiang Cheng but the sound of Baxia and his movement is enough to set off Jin Ling again.
Jiang Cheng honestly wonders if he doesn’t have a golden core already, because he simply cannot imagine how a person this small can make this much noise or keep going for days on end.
“Nie-zongzhu,” Jiang Cheng greets him, still, because he needs to be as polite as he can, and he can’t bow.
“None of that,” Nie Mingjue waves him off and then puts a big hand on Jin Ling’s back. “What seems to be the problem?” he asks and Jiang Cheng helplessly looks up at him.
“He’s just colicky, I’ve been told,” he whispers, barely audible over the cries and Jiang Cheng has to fight some tears himself.
He’s just so, so tired.

Jiang Cheng tries very hard not to think about Nie Mingjue at the beach, in just his swim-shorts, too, because even the thought does strange things to his heart.
He would have probably simply dropped dead if he saw Nie Mingjue there, glistening with water and Jiang Cheng can feel himself going red in the face just because he’s thinking about Nie Mingjue asking him to put some sunscreen on him.
Fuck, he’s got it bad for the other man.
Jiang Cheng submerges himself in the whirlpool as best as he can, but it’s so warm that it’s barely doing anything at all for him. When he comes back up he fears he stayed under for longer than he thought, because Nie Mingjue is standing at the edge of the whirlpool.

“How about this,” Nie Mingjue says and moves his hand to cup Jiang Cheng’s cheek in it. “I’ll keep a lantern lit for you, so you’ll always find your way home.”
It’s stupid, Nie Mingjue knows it, because by the time Jiang Cheng will be able to see the lantern, he is already mostly home, but he can’t help himself. “And when your parents are here, I’ll extinguish it so you know to stay away,” he adds and it startles a laugh out of Jiang Cheng.
“Okay,” he softly agrees and turns his head into Nie Mingjue’s hand. “And I’ll come back.”
It sounds like a promise, but Nie Mingjue doesn’t dare to trust it.

Nie Mingjue sits up straighter as well, but he refuses to stand up. She interrupted their evening, so Yu Ziyuan can stand a little rudeness.

Jiang Cheng is holding on, that much is true, but it’s more for Jin Ling’s sake than his own. But Jiang Cheng is not going to leave Jin Ling all alone in the world and so instead of succumbing to his grief he comes here to visit every other day.
Nie Mingjue’s grave is just the last one in a long line of graves he has to visit—his parents, his sister and her husband, Wei Wuxian—and he would almost say that it is one of the hardest.

Jiang Cheng feels like his heart is going to beat right out of his chest, but he did it. He asked the question and now it’s out of his hands.
Nie Mingjue blinks, clearly surprised, but then he nods.
“Sure, that sounds good,” he says and while a part of Jiang Cheng wants to jump up and down in victory another part shrivels right up.
Nie Mingjue doesn’t sound too enthusiastic about it and Jiang Cheng wonders if it’s too late to take it back.

Nie Mingjue blinks at Jiang Cheng at that, processing his words, but in the end he shakes his head.
“No. I will not let you court me if I could still die of qi poisoning.”
“You stubborn, stubborn man,” Jiang Cheng hisses. “Fine. I’ll heal you. I’ll find a way to heal you. See what excuse you can come up with then,” he snaps out and leaves the room with billowing robes.
Nie Mingjue can only stare after him and wonder what he just unleashed unto the world.

He can’t breathe and he can’t walk and he’s pretty sure he can’t see with how the tears start streaming down his face so instead of stumbling along he crouches down. Pressing his hands over his ears does nothing but make the ringing in them worse but he can still hear his parents and Wei Wuxian and he can’t do this, he can’t, it’s all too much.
