Summary
"Rung onlined and took immediate inventory of changes in his frame—only to find none. He tensed up, scanned again. He'd been put through forty-seven surgeries thus far, and he'd never onlined to—to nothing. Perhaps they'd altered his scanner this time, and that was the reason it had failed to detect anything. But something else— something under his plating, beneath even his protoform, felt changed in a much deeper way than something as trivial as a scanner. Anticipation bristled at the base of his helm."
Rung's handlers have a new strategy for dealing with their problem patient.

Summary
" “Hey, doc, you okay?”
'Answer when asked a direct question,' the Functionists had said. 'Tell me you're okay,' Whirl had ordered. It'd been millions of years, but this sensation—this pull, this need to obey, to serve—wasn't one he could forget.
“I'm fine,” he lied. An involuntary flush of pride at obeying drove back the horror—but only for a moment."
Rung's helm gets reassembled after the hostage situation, but everything is not as it should be.

Summary
" “You're too nice to me, doc.”
“I think you ought to be kinder to yourself, honestly.” Rung's brow furrowed with concentration as he screwed in another panel of the ship. They lapsed into silence again, he felt more at ease than he had in longer than he could remember. Whirl's EM field, however, still shimmered with touches of anxiety.
“We haven't really talked about it, y'know?” Whirl said. “But it changed stuff, didn't it?”
He didn't have to say what "it" was. They both knew.
“It did,” Rung agreed, hesitated. “If I had to live with the coding again, I would not pick anyone else to be my master. You were very good to me.” "
Rung's slavecoding is dormant once more, but he and Whirl remain shaken by their ordeal. They resolve to make the most of the present, but there are still plenty of monsters from Rung's past waiting to catch up with him...
