“You should report your mother to the authorities for that kind of abuse,” Logan said conversationally.
The boy jumped. He instantly drew his hoodie around himself, attempting to cover the obvious bruising- and only further proving Logan’s hypothesis.
“What- What do you mean?”

Summary
The castle swam around him and Virgil grabbed the brick behind him, hand slipping from his mouth to scratch against the uneven stone. He closed his eyes and quietly attempted to steady his breathing, a dance he was both used to and one he would never truly learn.
“The sorting ceremony will be quite quick,” Logan said quietly.
The mere sturdiness of his voice kept Virgil from falling apart. He opened one eye and glanced over at him.

“Please come with me.”
“I can’t. Roman will get suspicious.”
“Screw Roman.” Logan moved so he was sitting beside his best friend on his bed and grabbed Virgil's knee. “I’m worried about you.”

“Finals shouldn’t be stressing you out this much.”
Logan turned to glare up at his Ravenclaw friend, not bothering to say hello before snapping, “Hypocrite.”
“You’re right. Let me rephrase.” Virgil leaned over the library desk, purposely pulling Logan’s inkwell so it was out of his reach. “Finals shouldn’t be stressing you out this much.”

“He’s not worth it,” Logan said conversationally.
Virgil frowned.
“You repeatedly give up things for him and he doesn’t do anything for you. In fact, he expects you to give up more. It’s appalling.”

“Virgil,” Janus said fluidly, “You should report your mom to the teachers here.”
Silence.
“Unless you’ve got a secret brother to protect, there’s literally no reason for you to keep quiet anymore.”

“L,” Virgil smiled, which made the entire deducing trip Logan had gone on completely pointless. “We’re here, so you can get out of that head of yours.”
Hogsmeade was a lot prettier than Logan expected. He’d seen pictures, of course, but none did justice compared to the sweet homey feeling of the town around them.

Virgil answered that for him.
“Is it true?!” Virgil half-asked, half-yelled at him. The palms of his hands hit the table, making Logan jump.
Logan, who had been going over exactly how to hack into the scientific records and name a star after Virgil in the library, looked up quickly and shut his book with a hurried snap.

That’s when the other woman had become Mom. And Roman loved her more than anything.
So he hadn’t noticed.
He hadn’t noticed when Virgil started leaving the house at 4:30 in the morning, returning by 7:30 just to grab his school bags.

“That cloud looks like a duck.”
Logan squinted at it. He supposed if he shifted his head to the side and pretended that the puffs of smoke coming from the back didn’t exist… it still would be just a blob.
“I don’t see it.”

Summary
They had been in the owlery for less than ten minutes before Patton somehow scared every single owl from him and had taken to running in circles and crying that nobody loved him.
“What do you suggest now?” Virgil had muttered to Logan while doing his best to hold up the sobbing Patton (who had latched onto him the moment Virgil stood up and suggested they take a break). “We could go scare all the pigeons away.”
Logan just shoved his glasses up his nose. “Cats.”

“Roman’s having a birthday party you’re invited to. It’ll probably be big because you’re wearing all your nice jewelry- which looks great by the way-” Virgil’s cheeks darkened slightly- “and you were only informed of the party around an hour ago, but you’re going anyway because of some strange being born day obligation.”
Virgil cracked a smile. “If you don’t think birthdays are important, why do you, Janus, and Patton always throw a huge party for me?”
“Because you like birthdays.”
