Summary
“I know Aurora!” She fights her way to her knees, yanking her wrists away from the shackles as if she can break them off on her own. “Th-this has never happened before. Something is wrong, I have to get to her! I—I have t-to—I can’t… Jonny, get me out of here!”

Summary
It’s wrong to hurt people.
It’s wrong to hurt people, even if it’s an accident, even if they hurt you at the same time. The voice in Brian’s head is his own, but the circuitry looping those words between the switch in his back and the growing fuzz in his brain feels as alien as it ever has. The face of the man in front of him tells him, in no uncertain terms, that he’s hurt him, and hurt merits punishment on Fort Galfridian.

Summary
Jonny has to hand it to this guy—gaining control of an entire clowder of octokittens is a significant feat.
It’s not the easiest way to take down a Mechanism, by any means, but it’s still impressive. Even someone as wiggly as Jonny doesn’t have room to move when he’s got half a dozen of the beasts hanging off of every limb, with another one perched on top of his head and chirping its little heart out. “What the fuck could you possibly want,” he snarls, shaking one octokitten off his toe before it can land a bite.

Summary
Ashes has spent enough time in the City to know who Ulysses is and what they’ve been up to, but when they finally stumble into the Styx one night, clutching their head and limping around the more distinguished patrons, they’re genuinely taken aback.

Summary
“Stay here, keep watch, and don’t leave your post.”
The Toy Soldier salutes, its elbow swinging outside of its control, and then the Rose Reds take off down the hill and it’s alone again. They won’t be coming back, but that’s okay! It’ll miss them, sure, but the Rose Reds are very similar characters after a while, and another set will surely be along to relieve it of duty before it can even blink. Well, it can’t blink at all, but that’s neither here nor there.

Summary
All of a sudden, Nastya realizes that they haven’t landed on a planet with other humans for… years, at least. “When was the last time you ate?” she asks, sitting down on the cot next to Carmilla with a few carefully-measured inches between them.
Carmilla doesn’t answer. Whether it’s because she’s too stubborn or she’s just not present, Nastya can’t tell.

Summary
Because fate loves to mock Brian, a stray shot splinters the rope holding him to the gallows, and he crumples onto the platform. He hasn’t moved in so long that it takes him a few minutes even to remember how, and by the time he rolls over and gets his knees under himself, the battle in the wasteland outside of town is over.

Summary
That’s when she first smells smoke.
All at once, something cold and prickly washes over her, turning her head fever-numb and making her hands shake at her sides. She inhales again in hopes of being wrong—no, that’s definitely smoke. No olfactory bulb malfunctions. Then she hears another resounding crack, like something incomprehensibly huge snapping in half, and seconds later, the loudest crash her ears can hope to process. Down the hill, something glows between the trees, sweeping closer with every moment.

Summary
Jonny is debating which crewmate to shoot for fun when a message alert goes off on the dashboard.
“Brian,” he barks, startling the Drumbot enough that he hits a harsh chord on the banjo and pouts up at Jonny. “Since when do we have outside messaging systems?”
“Since always,” Ivy pipes up. “No one messages us because we kill them first.”

Summary
It’s not until they’re all passing under the bridge that Lyf realizes what it’s actually for. They hear something rumbling, distant and then suddenly very close, shaking the ground and the air and everything around them. When they look up, between the metal beams overhead, they spy the undercarriage of a train passing by in rapid flashes. Nothing about the train seems unusual—it’s sleek silver metal, dulled by city grime and chugging along fast enough that it disappears in a matter of seconds. The roaring in Lyf’s head, however, doesn’t leave.

Lyfrassir has been to dozens of shows by now, and given that Gunpowder Tim vs. the Moon Kaiser is a crowd favorite, they’re well-acquainted with the song. But this is the first time that they’ve seen Tim nearly trip over his own guitar on his way offstage, hands shaking and eyes unfocused, and they’re immediately concerned.

Summary
The squadron has long since decided that there’s something up with this halfling, the one that never turns down an order and moves like a clockwork figurine. It’s a fantastic fighter, though, so no one questions it—not its bizarre patterns of speech, or its extremely fake mustache, or its penchant for shiny bits and bobs from any uniform it can get its hands on. When it ends up in the path of yet another wayward IED, a half-dozen of its Rose Red comrades rush to its side to assess the damage.
