Summary
"Fine, whatever. Love you too, asshole. I hope you enjoy your walk home with your stupid, grainy bread. Taking Nature's Own a little too much to heart, but sure," Dean tells him, flashing him a sarcastic smile and swiveling around in the aisle to march away. He throws out something over his shoulder, careless and barbed. "I'm not paying for that shitty cardboard."
Dean's three aisles over when he realizes what, precisely, he said. Thankfully, when he comes to this conclusion, he's holding a box of poptarts, so when he fumbles and drops them to the floor, it's not a huge mess. He stares down at the slightly dented box of Brown Sugar Poptarts, and he has a very swift and very unshakeable crisis right there and then.
Love you too, asshole.
No, no, no. Why would he say that? Why would he do that? In the middle of the goddamn grocery store while arguing about bread? That's not—that can't be how it happens. That can't be.

Summary
castiel comes to dean, asking for a place to stay while he completes a ritual that will supposedly replenish his grace, though it will leave him human for three days. dean accepts, but with hunters trying to kill him and sam, and the abundance of monsters after lucifer's release, he's not sure how he's going to be able to protect all three of them at the same time.
~
Sam drops down, taking Cas’s head and resting it in his lap. Blood is pooling on the pavement beneath Cas, soaking his trench coat, and Dean has the painful realization that there’s nothing he can do. If the bullet went right through Cas, he needs to have pressure on both wounds, but it’s too late. There’s too much blood, and Cas is too pale.
“Don’t you fucking die,” he hisses. “Dammit, Cas, don’t you fucking die, now is not the time to die.”~
set after s5 finale but other than that, very vague timeline

Summary
It's like being buried at the bottom of a very deep, very dark well. Castiel has lived enough, sinned enough, for the weight of his mistakes to pin him flat in the darkness. It's shame and guilt and grief and each memory anchors him with a razor specificity, there in the lightless silence. This is how it works, he supposes. His own thoughts will devour him alive until he sips oblivion by choice, out of sheer desperation, and the void will know peace at last.
But that was the bargain. He took that upon himself. His choice. Choice, he thinks, and would laugh if he still had a mouth to laugh with. Freedom is a length of rope.
Then, after what could have been many eternities or just one, a pang of agony comes that isn't his own.
*
Or: the one where Castiel saves himself.

Summary
Sam swallowed hard. "Dean, what... what happened to him?"
Dean didn't know how to answer that. He hadn't seen Castiel since he was trapped in the fancy prison cell with the cheeseburgers and gold trim. He had called Castiel soulless and spineless, among other things, and then he had cut the angel off.
"We're done."
"Dean—"
"We're done."Castiel had vanished after that, and Dean hadn't seen him since. Maybe he still hadn't seen him. Because the broken person cowering in front of him was not Castiel. It couldn't be.
