Only the finest Gautier raspberries for my beloved Mercedes.” He grabbed the cut-up peaches and blueberries and put them on her plate, along with the Dagdan toast he had already prepared. For once, he was positively satisfied with himself as he saw her eyes light up. He could quench all of his thirst simply from this divine beauty that a sinful man like him was lucky to call his own.
Sylvain keeps messing up, no matter how hard he tries. Perhaps a little bribery will do the trick...

“It’s almost expected nowadays,” Sylvain replied with a shrug of his shoulders, his gaze turning away to look at his gloved hands. “Seems I can’t go just one day without them biting my ass about something.”
“They only wish to help, you know.”
“I don’t need any.”
Mercedes’ porcelain hand soon landed on his own, her thumb so delicate in rubbing a small outline across his armored hands. Compared to his own, Mercedes’ hands were always so much more beautiful than his own; the way they fit in his, how carefully she held everything, how comforting just the brush of her skin was on his. Sylvain swallowed down, a shiver adding to as his hand twitched below hers.
“Would you have responded the same if I proposed the same idea?”
Sylvain gave a small laugh, his voice cracking in the process. “If I needed help, I would have just gone to you for it anyway.”
“I know.”

He cranes his neck upward, gaze scanning the arches rising high above them. Like the pews, they’ve reverted to their true unthreatening form: beautiful curves, ever unreachable. “Sometimes I think this place might be haunted.”
What does that have to do with anything? he expects her to say. “I thought you didn’t believe in ghosts, Sylvain.”
He looks at her, sees the understated fearlessness in the way she carries herself. “Ghosts aren’t the only creatures capable of haunting, Mercedes,” he says with a smile. “And I would argue… that you don’t believe in them, either.”
