“Well, I’ll just have to be your new best mate to make up for it, won’t I?” Charles declared, grinning broadly at him.
Edwin smiled. It was funny how easily the sight of that smile eased the weight that had been sitting on his chest all day. It was like he was magic. Maybe he was. Charles had never believed in that kind of thing before, but if there was anything that could make him, it would be that soft smile on Edwin’s lips.
“I suppose as your newly appointed ‘best friend’,” Edwin said, a teasing lilt to his voice. “It is my duty to tell you to go home. I hate to say it, Charles, but you look horrible.”
Charles winced a little, but he still laughed. “Oh, fuck off. You don’t hate to say it. Humbling me is your favourite pastime.”
“Third favourite.” Edwin corrected.

Summary
On the stage is a man, alone, perched on a tall wooden stool with an acoustic guitar on his lap. He’s wearing a white singlet, a gold chain and a single earring shining against his bronzed skin, and though Edwin would never deign to wear anything so revealing – he himself is in a neatly pressed suit, the same thing he always wears to writing sessions – he cannot deny that the overall effect is rather striking on this man.
Edwin is prepared to let out a weary sigh – one unfortunate side effect of a career in the music industry is that his tolerance for run-of-the-mill coffee shop performers singing clumsy covers is frightfully low. But then the man opens his mouth, and Edwin promptly forgets to be critical.

“Alright. What is not aces is that this is transpiring to be futile. I may have to contact Monty and see if he is willing to-”
“No!” The protest escaped Charles before he realised it, his mouth snapping shut immediately at Edwin's incredulous look. The thought of some random bloke getting it on with Edwin – even for a ruse – was enough to make him do something stupid. “Why do you need someone else, mate? I’m right here, aren’t I?”
Fuck, too stupid.
Edwin sucked in a sharp breath, the only indication that Charles had stepped onto an invisible landmine. “What are you offering, Charles?”
Now that he’d started, he couldn’t stop. “For the holiday party, mate. You need someone who knows you, someone who’s willing to go along with it, someone you’re comfortable with, then- well, I’m offering myself up, mate.”

Surely there is no way pretending to be a couple for a christmas office party can go wrong.

Summary
The thing is, while Edwin appreciates Charles’ chivalry in pretending it’s nothing more than a bit of snow, the fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more than that. The whole wretched business started two weeks ago when they were breaking into an abandoned witch’s workshop, and Charles broke a little glass bottle labelled, ominously, The Shove. Edwin had opened his mouth to warn Charles, but he wasn’t quick enough, and they both caught a faceful of chalky, overpoweringly rose-scented powder that made Edwin sneeze for the time since 1916. He had hoped that time might have diminished its efficacy, but it wasn’t long before the effects began to make themselves known. Over the last two weeks, it’s become clear that not only is the spell still quite functional, but it appears to be contriving to put them in—Edwin feels hotly embarrassed all over to think of it—romantic situations.

“So basically, you stand a few feet away from each other and you take small steps forward, slowly, both at the same time, yeah? And you have to hold eye contact the whole time, that’s the important part! You walk towards each other until you meet under the mistletoe–”
“The mistletoe?!” Edwin startled. During his time it was not used for silly games, but a rather serious matter of kissing a potential match during social gatherings.“Why does it have to happen under the mistletoe?”
“Forget about that.” Charles quickly dismissed his concern. “It doesn’t really matter. The big thing is that you come really close to each other and whoever stops or averts their eyes first - loses. And the winner will get to choose our Christmas mixtape.”
---
OR: In order to choose the person in charge of their holiday music, Charles proposes a game that has them standing really close under the mistletoe, while intently looking into each other's eyes. After Port Townsend, Edwin begins to question the fairness of the game.

Summary
The guests all stood and turned back to face the doors as they slid open. The music rose to a crescendo, and in walked Edwin, beautifully dressed and clutching a spray of flowers. He was wearing that small and secret smile that Charles knew better than his own, strutting down the aisle like it was a runway privileged enough to feature him. Charles couldn’t take his eyes off him even if he wanted to. The world and everyone in it faded away, ‘til Edwin was all he could see. If Charles could choose to live in this moment for the rest of forever, he would.

Summary
There's just one problem, Charles is discovering: Charles isn't the only person with eyes. Or a heart. Or a brain.
There’s this one guy in particular, Patrick, all 6’3” of blond-curled, well-muscled Irish rugby glory, who has a charming smile and actually meets Edwin on his own terms when they step away to the bar to pause from dancing about an hour in, because Charles knows that Edwin needs a moment to collect himself from all of the noise and crowd.
And Patrick likes Edwin. His gaze keeps dropping to Edwin's lips. He slips a pick-up line or two into the middle of conversation.
Charles knows that Edwin loves him. That he stopped on the steps to goddamn Hell in order to tell him. They’re soulmates, they’re Orpheus and Eurydice, except they’re not a tragedy, they made it out together. They want each other, love each other, and most importantly they like each other. Thirty five years is not exactly something that goes away on a whim.
And yet- it’s hard, sometimes, to keep old insecurities from creeping in on him.
(Charles gets jealous. Edwin reassures him.)

Summary
Edwin’s eyes were downcast, avoiding Charles' gaze. “I was offered a deal. To be able to leave this place, to return home.” Charles heart sank.
He tried to keep his voice steady, but couldn’t help the tremor that came out. “A deal? What kind of deal?”
“The fae court said I could be let out of my contract, but that nature demands balance. I would need to offer up someone else who has sustained a curse. They…” he finally met Charles’ eyes, “Charles, I think they know about you.”

Summary
“Suspicions?” Crystal snorted, sitting down next to Jesse on the bed. “What suspicions?”
“I suspect that behind your tough and uncaring persona…” Jesse leaned in, as if sharing a secret. “Is a girl who seriously cares about what others think. I really think that Crystal Palace Surname Von Hoverkraft is secretly a big softie.”
“Dream on,” Crystal snorted. “Haven’t you heard? I’m mean and I’m a bitch. That isn’t changing any time soon.”
“Whatever you say,” Jesse grinned and reached out to hold Crystal’s face. “I know better.”
