Vi hadn’t gotten much sleep.
And what sleep she had managed to grab was haunted by gorgeous blue eyes and the word "pretty."
“--Vi?”
She fumbled the lock.
“Oh - hey.”
“You didn't hear a word I just said," Ekko accused.
“Sorry, I just can’t get this stupid fucking lock to--"
It popped open.
“Oh,” Vi said, exhaling sharply, trying again to clear “pretty” out of her mind. “What were you uh…?”
Ekko grinned at her knowingly, “Video games? Unless you’ve got something…or someone better to do?”
Vi glared at him.
Ekko’s eyes widened, “Wait. Seriously? You’re hiding it? Now I have to know.”
Vi sighed. "It’s nobody, Ekko.”
Ekko raised an eyebrow, "If you say so."
Vi grabbed her books with one hand, the other curled into a fist as her classmates' words filtered in.
Yet another reason to count the days 'til she could leave this place.
It was full of rich, homophobic assholes.
And girls who stared at you for months like you were gum stuck to the bottom of their shoes and then told you your name was pretty.

In response the girl very slowly made a show of chewing her gum and looking Caitlyn up and down again. Then she huffed, and pushed to a stand while rolling one shoulder, stepping away from the locker. A motion that put her a bit closer into Caitlyn’s bubble, leaning in with another snap of her gum. With her own mocking politeness in her sweet tone, she gestured to the locker.
“There ya go Cupcake, all you had to do was ask.”
Five times Vi and Caitlyn saw each other by the locker and one time they didn’t.
