Summary
"I guess Matthew didn't leave earlier because he was afraid I couldn't bear the grief that was to come."
"I thought you'd be quite offended if someone assumed you couldn't bear something," Jerry remarked.
Anne laughed. "It's not quite like that. It's Matthew, after all. Do you remember Christmas 1913? I was so worried then, because Marilla said Matthew wasn't quite well, and I wanted to come home more often as usual. But my hands were full with Nan and Di and the deadline for the article."
"He had a little episode on Boxing Day, and Marilla strictly forbid me from telling you. I wrote a letter to Gilbert just in case, but you found it first, and you yelled at me over the phone."
"I got scolded by the operator for taking too long." Anne grinned, before her expression turned somber.
(After Matthew's funeral, Anne and Jerry sat together and talked about the past, the present, and the future.)

Summary
It’s ridiculous. She’s barely seen Gilbert Blythe in months. They’ve exchanged only the most cursory of pleasantries when they both happen to be in the same places during school breaks, and they haven’t exchanged a single letter in even longer. So why he’s come to be haunting her subconscious is really anyone’s guess, but she’s beginning to be irritated by it.
There’s only one solution.
She has to see him.

Summary
His eyes landed on her braid, and he was seized with an irrational, immature, completely idiotic inspiration. He knew what would get her attention. He knew what she couldn't possibly ignore.
Gilbert Blythe had read poetry, newspapers, and literature. His vocabulary was extensive and admirable. As such, he had a huge inventory of synonyms for the word “orange.” Yet, somehow, when faced with the beauty of Anne’s vibrant red hair, only one word came to his mind.
He grabbed her braid and jerked it sharply, pulling her head along with it. “Carrots!”
A canon-compliant rewrite of Gilbert and Anne's first interactions, in which I try to figure out exactly what makes this boy tick.

Summary
“What are you going to do after Queens, Anne?” he asks, his mouth wrapped around the letters of her name, warm and at home. “Travel the world? Take it by force and by storm? Or, become a reclusive artist in a faraway fairytale tower?”
She laughs in spite of herself. “I could never be a recluse,” she says, smoothing stray hairs away from her brow bone. “There is too much of me. If I don’t share myself with the world, I think I would go insane with the company.”

Summary
Marilla had put her teacup down with a quelling look at Mrs. Lynde. “I’m sure you’ll discuss marriage when you’re good and ready for it,” she’d said to Anne.
“They should be ready for it now, what with all the late night meandering they’ve been doing all summer,” Mrs. Lynde had said before subsiding at another fierce look from Marilla. Anne, face flaming, had fled soon thereafter.
But the thought had been planted, and now she finds it very hard to shake. A curious swell of panic and anticipation rises within her every time she considers it. Husband, she thinks, and the word sounds altogether unfamiliar. Wife, she thinks, and that’s even stranger.

Summary
Ruby was finding it hard to get to her feet, let alone to walk out the door. She wasn't courageous like Anne. She didn't have Diana's elegant presence, Josie's forthright boldness, Jane's practiced indifference, or Tillie's boisterous charm; she was just sweet, innocent Ruby Gillis, always looking for some sign that her prince had noticed her in her shy, wistful tower.
Moody, unlikely though it had once seemed, had become that prince.

Timid is the start of Ruby and Moody's love, and it is all the more precious for it.
Takes place the day after the entrance exam. -
