🚫Top Mistakes to avoid when applying for a UX Job 🚫 When hiring a UX team member, here's my quick-scan method to see if a candidate might be the right fit before diving deeper: 📄 Resume Scan - Clarity and organization: A messy resume is an immediate red flag. As UX professionals, candidates should demonstrate their understanding of key UX principles like information prioritization and clarity. If a resume is hard to read, it's a sign they might not excel in these areas. - Relevant experience: The experience listed should align with the position. I've recently seen designers applying for writer roles without any mention of writing experience. Make sure your resume highlights the relevant skills for the job you're applying for. - Experience level: When we are looking for 5 years of experience, I check that the relevant experience is there. Babysitting doesn’t count. Overly under-experienced profiles will be automatically rejected. Additionally, over-experienced candidates need to provide a clear rationale for their application. Without an explanation, it can seem like a waste of time. Justify why you’re applying for a role that may appear below your experience level. 🎨 Portfolio Peek - Accessibility: If your portfolio is password-protected or requires creating an account, it’s a hassle. Ensure your work is easily accessible. - Content: A portfolio filled only with visuals without context or explanation is not enough. It should highlight your thought process and make it clear what role you played in each project. - Relevance to position: Your portfolio should include projects that are relevant to the role you’re applying for. For example, if the position involves complex data visualization or B2B projects, your portfolio should reflect that. Having only basic B2C landing pages might not work. 📋 Questionnaire Glance - Length and Relevance: Responses should be concise yet comprehensive. Answers that are too short, too long, or irrelevant indicate a lack of understanding of the question or the role. - Authenticity: Ensure your answers are authentic and not generated by AI. Genuine responses reflect your thought process and problem-solving skills. These quick checks help me decide if we should explore your application further. They're like the trailer before the movie! What an incredible experience moderating my first panel! Did I feel nervous? Absolutely. But more importantly, it built my confidence to moderate the next one. Confidence doesn’t come before—it’s built through action, after you’ve done it. At Design Leadership MY’s FUSECON24 recent satelite event on “What Makes a Great Product Culture and Product Org”, I had the privilege of hosting a fantastic group of panelists, each sharing their unique perspectives on what makes SEEK a truly product-led organization.
