About us
Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – the UN Migration Agency, is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefits of all and does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. The International Organization for Migration has been operationally present in Albania since 1992, while Albania became an IOM member state in 1993. Since then, IOM has become one of the main international partners of the Government of Albania (GoA), supporting its continuous progress and efforts in migration governance in line with Albania’s priorities of European Union integration. IOM is a member of the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Albania since 2007. IOM actively contributes to the implementation of the GoA-UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022-2026, that guides the work of the GoA and the UNCT and their partnerships, and aligns the support, funds and programmes of UN agencies, to Albania’s development priorities. In line with the IOM Global Strategic Vision and national priorities, IOM Albania’s strategic approach is structures around three pillars: - Resilience - Mobility - Governance

🔴 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬! IOM is launching a new project to enhance local governance on regular migration of Albanian citizens, focusing on employment migration, with a strong commitment to gender mainstreaming and minority inclusion. We kicked off with four dynamic consultative workshops in 📍 Shkodra, Tirana, Korca, and Vlora. IOM, GIZ, representatives from 61 municipalities, the Agency for the Support of Self-Local Government and the National Agency for Employment and Skills came together to discuss the intervention approach and were encouraged to actively engage throughout the project implementation. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the project “𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚” will assist central and local institutions in Albania to develop, strengthen capacities, and pilot the legal, administrative, and operational procedures for migration. 👉 Read more about the project: https://bit.ly/3W2tW1R

Our Western Balkans Coordinator Laura Lungarotti visited IOM offices in Shengjin to discuss the resettlement of Afghan nationals who fled their country following the turbulent transfer of power in 2021. IOM, in coordination with embassies, host countries' immigration authorities, and airport and carrier authorities, has supported immigration interviews, fitness-to-travel checks, cultural and pre-departure orientations, movement operations, and more for over 5,700 Afghan nationals.

🚨 Call for Abstracts: Focus on Migrant Smuggling 🚨 We are excited to announce a call for abstracts in collaboration with the Workstream on "Ensuring migrant protection through strengthened responses to migrant smuggling and increased coordination on its linkages with trafficking in persons." This initiative, co-led under the United Nations Network on Migration umbrella, promotes an enhanced focus on migrants' agency, vulnerabilities, needs, and their ties to local contexts. It emphasizes integrating innovative perspectives that consider migrants' views into counter-smuggling discourses. Selected abstracts and subsequent extended papers will be featured in a Special Issue, and opportunities will be provided for researchers to discuss and present their findings to policymakers, international organization staff, and fellow academics. We encourage submissions that incorporate gender and intersectional perspectives and particularly welcome underrepresented voices. 📝 Submission Deadline: June 30, 2024 🌍 Languages: English, French and Spanish 📢 More info at: https://lnkd.in/dQ-dVfXY Join us in contributing to this crucial field of study and making a meaningful impact! 🌍
