In die Boeddhavamsa, ’n deel van die Pali-kanon, word die lewe van Gautama Boeddha en die vorige 27 Boeddhas beskryf.[1]
Die Sewe Boeddhas van die Antieke Tyd
[wysig | wysig bron]Volgens Boeddhistiese tradisie het elke kalpa (of eon) 1 000 Boeddhas.[2] Die vorige kalpa was die vyuhakalpa (Glorieryke Eon), en die huidige kalpa is die bhadrakalpa (Gunstige Eon).[3] Die "Sewe Boeddhas van die Antieke Tyd" (Saptatathagata) is sewe Boeddhas wat die vyuhakalpa en bhadrakalpa oorbrug:[4]
- Vipassi (die 998ste Boeddha van die vyuhakalpa)
- Sikhi (die 999ste Boeddha van die vyuhakalpa)
- Vessabhu (die 1 000ste Boeddha van die vyuhakalpa)
- Kakusandha (die 1ste Boeddha van die bhadrakalpa)
- Konagamana (die 2de Boeddha van die bhadrakalpa)
- Kassapa (die 3de Boeddha van die bhadrakalpa)
- Gautama (die 4de Boeddha van die bhadrakalpa)
Op dié sewe sal Maitreya, die 5de en toekomstige Boeddha van die bhadrakalpa, volg.
