Building on top of many other needs, access to clean water🌊 left many people vulnerable especially returnees in Woch Tangi, eastern #Afghanistan, Nangarhar province. With Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA) support, UN-Habitat Afghanistan is pleased to have completed the construction of a water tower equipped with a well and solar system. The facility will provide access to clean #water for over 600 families in Woch Tangi and for many others in neighboring communities. Now, the residents especially #children and women, don’t need to walk miles for a few litters of water while it’s being accessible in their #community🏙️. Thanks to our donors and partners, together, we’re making a tangible impact on many Afghan communities.

#Floods are harsh and disastrous but manageable. We’re pleased to announce the completion of 2 protection walls in Khost province, each in length of 175 and 245 meters. The affected people were still living at risk in Kootkai and Doormalaka villages, now with support of Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), communities are safe from flood risks. The wall will not only protect communities but also enhance the flow of water in the area, contributing to growth in agriculture, local economy, and a green environment. Our work continues to make tangible #impact and transform Afghan communities into #safe and hopeful places to live!

Expert and Advisor in Housing and Urban Policies for Organizations from the Global South | Activist on Urban Informality, Social Housing and Cities
Last week, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced my appointment as Executive Director of the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) upon my election by the UN General Assembly. I feel extremely honoured to be the first person from the Latin American and Caribbean region to assume this position and appreciate the trust in my professional capacity. I'm impressed and enthusiastic about the good wishes received from all parts of the world - individuals, institutions, and my new colleagues from the United Nations system. I see that I am not embarking on this new journey alone, and it gives me even more confidence and strength to work hard and leverage impact. Lastly, I would like to express my profound gratitude for all the messages received and reaffirm my commitment to the urban agenda that has marked my trajectory over the last 20 years. Together, we will continue to advance sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life in cities and communities around the world.
