Press Release: Crowdfunding Campaign Launch to Support Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons of Afghanistan October 1st, 2024, Dubai: In a step towards empowering Afghan returnees and the displaced in Afghanistan, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and Chairperson of the Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), Indrika Ratwatte, launched the "OMID" (Hope) crowdfunding campaign. The initiative aims to raise US$1 million to support displaced Afghans, by establishing 1,000 local businesses, creating thousands of jobs and fostering sustainable economic growth. The businesses will receive technical training, small grants, and essential equipment, making a long-term impact on livelihoods and economic growth for Afghanistan. STFA’s innovative approach allows Afghan communities to identify opportunities and challenges, collaboratively develop solutions, and submit proposals. These proposals will undergo expert review and selection, ensuring that the supported businesses reflect local needs and drive positive change from the grassroots level. “This is a very important moment to enable all of us to contribute to one of the most important challenges in Afghanistan.” said Indrika Ratwatte. “This platform is going to focus on durable solutions, enabling people to rebuild their lives and enhancing the resilience of communities.” STFA’s ongoing efforts have already supported over 5 million Afghans, especially the most vulnerable, including women, girls, youth and persons with disabilities, by reestablishing access to essential services and job opportunities. The crowdfunding initiative amplifies these efforts by giving individuals worldwide a chance to contribute directly to the cause. Hiroko Massey, STFA Fund Manager, emphasized, “We are calling on the global community to step forward and help returnees and IDPs establish and scale up businesses that can create ripples of economic empowerment.” How to Contribute: Supporters can contribute by visiting https://bethehope4afg.org/ or by scanning the QR code in the image.
