Have tariffs shrunk the US trade deficit? The US trade deficit has risen in dollar terms since 2018 and is basically unchanged as a share of GDP. However, there has been a big change in the geographical distribution of the deficit. The bilateral deficit with China has shrunk considerably to US$279 billion in 2023 from US$418 billion in 2018, whereas the bilateral deficits with Mexico, Canada, Vietnam and other Asian economies have risen sharply.
