Launched during the Clean Energy Ministerial in #Brazil, during a meeting of the International Hydrogen Trade Forum, a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reveals that while international standards and certification schemes are being developed at pace for the #hydrogen sector, equivalent frameworks are lagging behind for ammonia, methanol and steel. Standardisation initiatives and certification schemes offer confidence to consumers and are particularly important when considering sustainable goods, as consumers of green commodities are especially concerned with understanding the greenhouse gas emission output associated with their consumption. There has been significant progress at an international level to work towards achieving interoperability of standards and certifications for the hydrogen sector. These efforts are vitally important and the new IRENA report argues that this interoperability aim should be extended to renewable ammonia and methanol, and green steel, to enable fully international markets for these commodities too.
