AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, was recently interviewed by Alex Irwin-Hunt, Global Markets Editor at fDi Intelligence. The Chairman shared insights to our Aysha-1 wind energy project, a 300MW onshore wind farm in Ethiopia’s Somali region. Africa is often referred to as the ‘Sun Continent’, home to 60% of the world’s best solar resources, yet only 1% of installed solar PV capacity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Solar energy has the potential to contribute 15% of Africa’s electricity by 2030, and 30% by 2040 (AOW: Investing in African Energy, 2024). Africa’s solar energy future looks brighter than ever. Certain key factors are enabling the renewable energy transition in Africa. As the cost of solar technology continues to decrease, it attracts significant investment in large-scale solar projects. Furthermore, numerous African governments are supporting the growth of renewable energy, with favorable policies, whilst international collaborations are driving even more innovation. We are delighted to announce that today we signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Implementation Agreement (IA) with Ethiopian Electric Power for the development and operation of the 300MW Aysha-1 wind energy project in Ethiopia 🇪🇹, which will be the largest wind farm in the Horn of Africa. The signing ceremony, which took place on Saturday, was attended by H.E. Ato. Ahmed Shide, Minister, Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia ; H.E. Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE; H.E. Khaled Hamad Sari Ahmed Almazrouei, Minsitry of Foreign Affairs, UAE; H.E. Mohamed Salem Al-Rashedi, UAE Ambassador to Ethiopia; Mr. Ato. Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power - የኢትዮጵያ ኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል; Mr. Ato. Abebe G. We recently launched the construction of the 24MWp Ituka Solar PV Project located in Uganda. This project will not only be the first solar PV project in the West Nile region but also its first internationally financed renewable IPP ☀️ Once operational, the project will produce 53,940MWh of clean energy per year, power 192,640 households and offset 26,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. As Uganda aims to increase its non-hydro renewable electricity generating capacity, particularly from solar, this project will support the country in achieving this goal whilst delivering economic and environmental benefits for generations to come 🍃 #AMEAPower #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Uganda #Africa #SolarPower

Last week a delegation from the IFC - International Finance Corporation, led by Saad Sabrah, IFC Egypt Country Head, and Jurgen von Borries, IFC Principal Environmental Specialist for Africa, visited our 500MW Abydos Solar PV and 500MW Amunet Wind sites in Egypt. This visit was an excellent opportunity for the team to see the construction progress of both projects, financed by IFC. Furthermore, we showcased our top-tier health, safety and environmental standards, as well as our commitment to local employment and community development. During the week, we also signed a partnership agreement with Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE). This agreement focused on the retrofitting of overhead power lines in the Gulf of Suez area, contributing to the protection of thousands of migratory birds annually. Our Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Solar PV Plant in Blitta, Togo, with a 70MW 4MWh installed capacity, is currently operational and powering more than 222,000 households. We have recently signed a power purchase agreement and concession agreement to expand the capacity of the solar project to 100MW and 14MWh BESS, making it the largest solar PV project with battery storage in West Africa 🌍 To support the economic and social development of the local community in Togo, we have invested in a range of initiatives in the region, including the construction and renovation of primary schools, the construction of a medical clinic with maternity support facilities, and providing a clean water supply. We established an internship program for engineering students from various technical institutions across Togo to gain practical experience at the solar plant. We are delighted to announce the groundbreaking of a 24MWp Solar Photovoltaic Project in Uganda 🇺🇬 The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place today, was attended by Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Minister of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda), who was the Guest of Honour, Ms. Irene Batebe, the Permanent Secretary - Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and Mr. Aqueel Bohra, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, AMEA Power. The 24 MWp Solar PV project is being implemented by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a project company registered in Uganda and fully owned by AMEA Power. Once commissioned, it will be the first and largest utility-scale grid-connected solar PV project in the West Nile Region ⚡️ The investment for the USD 19 million project financing was secured during COP28 from Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF). ATIDI - African Trade & Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) is supporting the project via its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF).
