Another revision of the world map for The Foxwood Chronicles (story starts here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5136447 ) - now with place names for everywhere covered until ~chapter 12, and with some more lakes, because I seemed to have created a very dry landmass!

It does say somewhere in chapter 5, "named by a founder with an odd sense of humour." Namely me :)
Fort Fortitude made me giggle when I read that. ^^
I always wonder what's up with mages setting up in the most ridiculous places possible, though.
"Wait, you want to build our sanctuary where?"
"On those islands, way out there!"
"But I can barely see them!"
"It doesn't matter! It'd be AWESOME!"
"But what about grocery runs? The nearest town is 200 miles away! It'd take weeks just to sail back and forth."
"Nonsense! We're mages! We've got MAGIC!"
"But... teleportation's impossible."
"MAGIC!" >:(

Ahh, but Tee explains that rather nicely in chapter 20! It's all about field dissipation to avoid over ionisation of the local environment :D
Hehe, I do remember that! I still think they really did it just because they thought it'd make them seem extra cool and mysterious being on little islands hundreds of miles away from anyone. :D
There's also the way most people pursuing intellectual things develop a tendency to shun the rest of the world. Certainly plenty of times when I want to shove people out of my way because they're slowing me down in getting on with something :P
Hmm... I guess there's been more than once I've wished I could just vanish somewhere where people would just stop bothering me! OK, maybe those mages are onto something. I need my own private cluster of islands where I can work without interference and claim I'm actually there because of ionization or something. :D
Oh, and something I just noticed... I'm no geologist, but nice job on the geography of the place. You can kind of see the history of the formation of the entire land where it probably formed from volcanoes or whatever, eventually snapped in the middle and curled in on itself. The placement of the mountains matches where you'd expect the stresses might be and such. Not sure if any of this was intentional, but if so, bonus points for detail. ^^

I call that place my bedroom. Or sometimes the shower... I tend to spend aaaages in the shower. Nobody pesters me, no outside things nibbling at my senses - loads of thinking gets done :o
And yer, the geography was considered ^^ Either a calderra volcano, or a meteor crater. Westchain islands... well I hadn't thought of them, but could have been formed during a retreating ice age. Whole crater full of meltwater eventually breaks out in a fifty meter tidal wave!
...that would be such a cool event to write about... dammit! Doesn't fit into this story. Why did I have a stable climate and geology? :(

Now that I think of it, a lot of cool thoughts do come from places like showers. My only problem is I have a REALLY bad memory and there's no way to write stuff down while you're in there!
Probably a good thing for the characters things are so stable, though! The last thing our poor heroes need are tsunamis when they already have to deal with dragons! :D

Oh but a volcano or two would totally be good for them...
Also, there have been plenty of times I have gone running up the stairs in only a towel to write stuff down :P Or if it's simple, I end up singing a few words over and over until I'm done.

You're so mean to your characters. ;_; Hehe. Best kind of author, though. ;)
Haha, sounds like making sure ideas aren't forgotten is fun adventure with you!

One of the basics for any story is that the protagonist(s) must face trials. Stuff must be hard, else it's dull to read about.
May they live in interesting times...

I think I heard some advice way back that hasn't failed me yet in the little I write: When in doubt, think of the worst thing that could possibly happen to the protagonist. And then do it. ^^
weird. i played a warcraft 3 game once that had the same looks as your map xD
Interesting.
The shape of the central sea and the mountains of the surrounding islands are reminiscent of an ancient crater.

Heh, yep, there's a hint of that! Couldn't tell you if it was impact or caldera volcano however ^^;
Hey, I'm new to mapmaking/worldbuilding, do you have any advice for me? Any tips for creating deserts, plains, swamps/marshes, jungles and mountains/volcanoes? What program did you use to create your map, and do you have any advice for it?
Been a while since I did this one, but really it was just Photoshop and some basic brushes. Draw the outline, colour it, start adding some land features. Any proper drawing package would do the job :)
Keep meaning to remake this something because I feel like I can do better ^^;

Honestly... not really ^^; I don't think this map is particularly realistic to begin with - one thing I want to do is give it a plausibility pass. The only real rules this was made by were:
1) rivers start in mountains, and end in oceans
2) rivers converge, but never diverge, with the exception of deltas on the shore
3) mountains that are not volcanoes have nothing to do with oceans
Given a bit more time and thought, I might have considered that...
- capital cities arise on trade routes. It's not likely that you'd get one that isn't on a coast.
- highland plateaus are a thing
- geography drives society. Towns and cities would have functions relative to the resources around them.
