Hiji River Bridge And The Nearby Road

Hiji River Bridge was a single-arch-bridge (called TAN-KYO-KYO) that was made of Ryukyu lime stone, constructed in Shuri Sakiyama-cho and compieted by the middle of the 17th century across Kanagusuku from Uchaya-Udun to Shikina-en Garden according to histrical accounts.
The total length of the bridge is 18.18m and its width is 5.2m. The central portion of the bridge is elevated slightly and the Bridge had three steps.
The parapet of this bridge is made of cut stones and very simple. However, it is characterized by unseen mortise joins which require highly trained skills.
The arch of the river resembles a circle. The river piers were constructed by NUNO-ZUMI style and other portions were constructed by AIKAT-ZUMI style. The stones were laid at the riverbed in order to prevent erosionby the river.
The access road is approximately 2.6m and the lengths of 28m in the east side of the bridge and 18.5min the west are designated as part of the cultural property.
