The raccoon (Procyon lotor), sometimes spelled racoon, also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon, and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized nocturnal omnivorous mammal of the family Procyonidae native to North America. The two other species of raccoon include the crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) and the critically endangered Cozumel raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus).
Raccoons are unusual for their thumbs, which enable them to open many closed containers (such as garbage cans) and doors. They are intelligent, with a reputation for being clever and mischievous.

Physical appearance[edit]
Raccoons have gray to brown fur, with a black mask-like marking around their eyes with white fur and rings on their tails.
Diet[edit]
The raccoon is an omnivore. It will eat meat including rabbits, rodents, shrews, birds, eggs, fish, turtles, insects, worms, carrion, and plants like nuts, berries, fruit and grains.
