Controversies

Need a bit of help--I can never find that place that suggests "Controversy sections are discouraged". Thanks, Drmies (talk) 20:49, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

@Drmies: there's {{Criticism section}} and an essay, Wikipedia:Criticism, which I think is where a lot of the resistance to controversy sections comes from. That said, there's a sentence in WP:NPOV that says "Try to achieve a more neutral text by folding debates into the narrative, rather than isolating them into sections that ignore or fight against each other", which seems a bit discouraging toward controversy sections. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:04, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
NinjaRobotPirate, that's the phrasing I remember. Thank you so much. Drmies (talk) 20:36, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Help for Draft:James Edward Ketelaar

Draft:James Edward Ketelaar

Hi guys — I'm a new editor here on Wikipedia. Creating a page for James E. Ketelaar, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. He teaches and researches Japanese religion. Would love to hear your feedback, and, if possible, what I need to do to have the page published / reviewed.

Looking forward to working with you,

There is a current RFC on a page that is a part of this Wikiproject. The RFC summary is as follows:

This article about two Victorian crossdressers currently ends with a limerick in which an animal being sodomized asks the perpetrator if he had mistaken the animal for the two article subjects. There are two questions for consideration: (1) Should this limerick end the article, as it currently does? and (2) Should the text of the limerick be included?

Any participation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, --Jerome Frank Disciple 14:26, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Death section

For people that have died, should a "Personal life" section be expanded to explicitly be titled "Personal life and death", if the death is but a one or two sentence update, and not otherwise extraordinary (Example)? I've seen an increase in this practice while reviewing recent death nominations at WP:ITNC. I personally find it verbose.—Bagumba (talk) 05:45, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

It seems a bit verbose to me, too. There are probably things that I'd focus my attention on before that, though. If nobody objected to a proposal at some central place, it seems like the sort of thing you could add to one of AWB's clean up rules. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 02:25, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Redlinked people

I produced a series of lists for WikiProject Women in Red showing titles resembling female names with most incoming redlinks. They are currently considering the entries for new articles. Would anyone be interested in similar lists but of men? These aren't exactly biography requests, as they aren't limited to topics which interest me and will include some non-notables and even non-people such as Albert Street (Ottawa), but they do show who is widely linked and lacks an article. Life of biographies after they stopped being famous

A biographical article can sometimes be expanded by mentioning what the person did after their major accomplishments were completed. For example, John David Larson, an American brigadier-general, was also president of an insurance company. Aage Leidersdorff, who participated at three different Olympics, also owned a successful fur business. Otto Jelinek, a figure skater, was later a Canadian cabinet minister. I'm mentioning these examples because sometimes post-military or post-sports careers can demonstrate notability even if significant coverage for the earlier career is hard to find. Haig-Brown family

I was wondering, what is the best way to connect all these articles together to show the family, starting with Alan Haig-Brown (footballer), Roderick Haig-Brown to Alan Haig-Brown, Helen Haig-Brown, all directly related and no Haig-Brown Surname article. I am not sure how many more there are. I don't know how to do a simple family tree, but it seems a family tree template would help that. Cheers. Govvy (talk) 21:01, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Hmm, nobody have comments for this...??? Govvy (talk) 04:15, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Unless there is significant coverage of the family as a whole, I would create a disambiguation page at Haig-Brown, using Tremblay (surname) as a model. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 06:28, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Wedding Date Correction

Hello. Possible BLP violation on Jasmin Moghbeli

Hi. Would someone please review Jasmin Moghbeli? There are possible unreliable claims about her ethnicity/background in Jasmin Moghbeli#Early life and education. If you take a look at Jasmin Moghbeli: Revision history, it all started since 24 August by IP users and new registered users (addition of unsourced/unreliable claims about nationality and ethnicity). Moghbeli does not seem a Kurdish person.[1][2] The citation[3] about her Kurdish background doen not look like a legit/reliable biography article. COI guidance

Hello! I have a question about WP:COISELF, which says that articles about someone you know in real life should go through the WP:AFC process. I would like to overhaul flesh out the sourcing on the article John Hagan (sailor), who is my grandfather. I'm very familiar with sourcing policies and obviously wouldn't use/rely on any sort of personal knowledge - If I were to draft a rewrite in my sandbox, could that then go through WP:EDITREQUEST to solve for the COI? ThadeusOfNazereth(he/him)Talk to Me! 11:43, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Wrong place to ask. This is a WikiProject talk page, not a place to get advice on biographies or conflicts of interest. For biographies, that'd probably best be WP:BLPN. For COI, that'd probably be WP:COIN. That said, our core guidelines and policies don't suddenly become optional once you've made a certain number of edits. Question about infobox |name= and article title?

Hi, the Template:Infobox person documentation reads (my bold):

Parameter Explanation
name Common name of person (defaults to article name if left blank; provide |birth_name= (below) if different from |name=). If middle initials are specified (or implied) by the lead of the article, and are not specified separately in the |birth_name= parameter, include them here. Do not put honorifics or alternative names in this parameter. There are separate parameters for these things, covered below.
birth_name Name at birth; only use if different from |name=.

I read this as saying not to use |birth_name= if it would otherwise repeat |name=, save for the specificity of a middle name/initial, and that if that is the case and |birth_name= is not used, a middle initial can be in |name= even if it's not present in the article title, provided a middle initial is "implied" by the lead (which I took to mean a middle name is present in the first sentence).

And I know elsewhere, MOS:INFOBOXNAME reads (again, my bold):

The template should have a large, bold title line. Either a table caption or a header can be used for this. It should be named the common name of the article's subject but may contain the full (official) name; this does not need to match the article's Wikipedia title, but falling back to use that (with {{PAGENAMEBASE}}) is usually fine. It should not contain a link.

As such I have read these to say that |name= can include a middle initial even if that middle initial is not in the article title, however I wanted to ask to see if there was a consensus that the article title had to match exactly. This conversation started initially for the article Lilias Armstrong (Talk:Lilias Armstrong#Middle initial in infobox), although when I found other FAs of biographies where the |name= differed from the article title to show precedent for a mismatch (see the edit summary [4] nope, not standard, see literally every GA/FA out there, they all got changed as well ([5], [6], [7], [8]). Looking for some clarification as to what is standard practice and if, perhaps, the Infobox person template documentation is out of sync with some policy elsewhere mandating |name= be identical to the WP:COMMONNAME selected as the title. Thanks for any thoughts which might clear up my confusion! Courtesy ping GiantSnowman. Umimmak (talk) 17:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

My nearly 20 year experience of editing BLPs is - the name parameter reflects the name of the subject (which is also the article title), with some minor exceptions like royalty/aristocracy, and the birthname/fullname parameter is for inclusion of middle names as well. If there is no middle name, then there is no need to use both. GiantSnowman 18:40, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

The biography appears unbalanced in light of ongoing controversies. What is the best way to handle disambiguation of personal name?

I really don't want this perceived as canvassing. What is the best placement for the title of an article when disambiguation is a problem? Let's say you have chess master, Thomas Wentworth, and there are seven other equally famous Thomas Wentworth's. He has the sourced middle name of Percy but really never uses it. No other Thomas Wentworth has the middle name Percy. Is it better to place his article title at Thomas Percy Wentworth or Thomas Wentworth (chess)? The middle name could be sourced to older university biographies, but really nothing else. Consensus will usually happen one way or the other regardless of guidelines depending on the editors in move request, but in most cases which way would WikiProject Biography lean as best for our readers? I've always wondered about this since we always strive not to use parentheses but then we also don't want to use a factual middle name that a person rarely uses. Fyunck(click) (talk) 03:39, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

If Thomas Percy Wentworth isn't his WP:COMMONNAME, then the article should be titled Thomas Wentworth (chess). WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 05:05, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Matters of alma maters

Hello,

I recently made an edit request on behalf of a client to update a BLP (see here) and was informed by the reviewing editor that biographies should not include information about the subject's undergraduate studies, and that "A bachelor's is not an academic degree." They cited MOS:DEGREE, and the line "The lead sentence should be concise: Academic (including honorary) degrees and professional qualifications may be mentioned in the article, along with the above, but should be omitted from the lead, as should superseded honors (e.g., the lesser of two grades in an order), and those issued by other entities (e.g., sub-national organizations)." This is from the section of the MOS on post-nominal letters, and I believe it refers to when to include those with the subject's name. As far as I know, a bachelor's is an academic degree. In fact, the article academic degrees clearly includes undergraduate degrees (including bachelor's), and in my experience alma maters, whether attended at an undergraduate or graduate level, are frequently mentioned in biographies on Wikipedia.

I would love any clarification editors here can provide on whether it is acceptable to mention undergraduate degrees and alma maters in a biography on Wikipedia. If there is something I am missing, please let me know, so I can make better requests in the future. Cheers! BINK Robin (talk) 17:53, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Jay Sures

Hello. I am a consultant working with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor can update Jay Sures’ page to include his recent action as a UC regent condemning the UC Ethnic Studies Faculty Council's request that the University of California retract its statement condemning the October 7 attack as “an act of terrorism.” I have provided suggested language and secondary sources below.

In October 2023, Sures in his role as a UC regent, publicly rebuked the UC Ethnic Studies Faculty Council request that UC leaders retract their statement declaring the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel “an act of terrorism…that deserves and requires our collective condemnation.” Sures expressed concern these faculty members were perpetuating hate and discrimination rather than advocating for “constructive paths to improve the situation for Israelis and Palestinians.” Weeks later the UC Regents committed $7 million to emergency mental health services, programs focused on better understanding antisemitism and Islamophobia, and training for faculty and staff on how to navigate their roles as educators.

Is it okay to remove those parts (with a comment on the talk page on why I've done it)? Asking because it's protected. Red Fiona (talk) 11:19, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

There is a discussion to change the "Discography" parameter to "Works", as seen in Infobox person. Administrators have said a consensus is needed in order to carry out this new adaptation. You can leave your opinion on this link. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 04:56, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
