Tagging for WP Death

And finding a range of death categories that have mysteriously had biography added by a now blocked user - as at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Cardiovascular_disease_deaths_by_country - anyone object if I remove the Biography tag at 'death' items - they do not seem appropriate in the way that I understand tagging. Any feedback appreciated

NOT to be confused with my tagging XXXX deaths - example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:2002_deaths - which I can see the viability of the mix of biography and death templates at those categories SatuSuro 07:39, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

I am not sure that I understand the problem or the difference that makes one category within the project scope and the other outside of it. Could you please expand your reasoning? Road Wizard (talk) 02:10, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about delay in response:- The blocked user had added biography tags on various disease death categories - but only a few - whether by extension - is it then that all death categories then follow as potential biography items as well? But if the death project now exists - is that sufficient to have Death tags rather than biography?

The second item is the year death categories seem to have death and biography - and it seems to make sense Hope that might explain it SatuSuro 01:13, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I would say that any category intended to include biographies would fall within the Biography project. Where the two projects overlap it is likely that you will see duplicated tags; however the Biography project wouldn't normally stray into the articles on death processes (brain death, decomposition) or death customs (funerals, cremations) so only the Death tag would be seen there. Road Wizard (talk) 18:19, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Can someone take a look at the history of this biography? It seems a right mess. I don't have any books on me at the moment so I'm not sure if the footballer, the composer that was previously written about, or both are a hoax, although I don't remember a player by this name ever playing for Watford. Note also that if it is genuine, the original contributor clearly has a COI. Thanks in advance, WFCforLife (talk) 08:21, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I don't know about the football player but the composer seems genuine. However the article appears to be a direct translation of the composer's biography on an Italian website. I have flagged it for consideration as a possible copyright violation (I would have flagged it for speedy deletion but am unsure whether the act of translation voids the copyright). Road Wizard (talk) 00:23, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
No, translation doesn't void copyright (translations can themselves be copyrighted). Fences&Windows 23:05, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

I have a question about false negative content on a biography page - is it OK to delete it? There are no articles supporting the content.

The page in question is the biography of Carol Stephenson

The article on Kathryn Leigh Scott states that she was born Marlene Kringstad on January 26, 1943. I was wondering what the source material for this was.

Two of the sources cited in the article, Memory Alpha and IMDB.com both give her date of birth as January 26, 1945. However, in her book My Scrapbook Memories of Dark Shadows, Ms. Scott tells of the time that she wanted to join Fidel Castro's revolution when she was 16. That would indicate that 1943 is the correct date of birth.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Game6E3 (talkcontribs) 18:40, 7 January 2010

Maurice Rostand

Hello. I just happened to check this bio and saw where Maurice Rostand died in 1968. I was the au pair to the grandson of Jean Rostand's cook and gardener. I lived with them in the attic of Jean Rostand's house in 1971. I remembered being warned that when I returned home late at night I had to be very careful because M. Maurice tended to roam the property at night with his pistol. He seemed to think his brother Jean was in danger from someone and was protecting him. I was terrified he would accidentally shoot me. I would call out: "C'est moi, M. Maurice!" I barely knew him, but I'm pretty sure he was alive. I think he lived nearby. (Jean Rostand lived at 29, rue de St. Cloud, Ville d'Avray). Anyway, if someone could check this date, I would appreciate it. Merci. Julia Samantha (talk) 03:52, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

A somewhat minor mistake: Paul Troost decorated the fast LinerItalic text Europa, a prestigious transatlantic ocean liner,(launched 1928) holder of the blue ribband (later Liberté under french flag after the americans unadvertedly set fire to the Normandie and offered war prise ex _ german Europa as a compensation)...the link seems to redirect to a sail training ship by the same name which started an useful but unglamorous career in 1911 s a lightship. Though Europa and her sistership Bremen were actually launched before Hitler came into power, both ships , along with "poular cruise" ships Whilelm Gustolff and Robert Ley were widely used as propaganda tools by nazi Germany —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.46.3.183 (talk) 20:17, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Marnie Weber and Party Boys

The Marnie Weber page is linked to a band she was in called Party Boys. The link goes to a page describing a band named Party Boys but it is the wrong band. I guess there were two bands called Party Boys. The one Marnie was an LA band and I guess they dont have a wiki page but they should. The Party Boys (LA) released three LPs in the 80s. They were described as:

""The Party Boys come from the deserted inner section of Los Angeles, a district of grumbling derelicts and crumbling warehouses where only aliens and artists dare to tread. By day their world thunders with trucks, crates and trains as loading orders are barked in Spanish. . . Come 6 p.m. downtown Los Angeles turns into Mars. Nobody speaks any language because there's nobody there. The whole city becomes a giant echo chamber. It's then that the Party Boys come out to play. In lofts, galleries, old warehouses, and bars the Party Boys, a six member coed crew, play relentless beats . . . You could even dance to them if you were desperate." How to title an event that is linked to a person so it is not a biography

I think there is some overall confusion in how Wikipedia deals with events which are linked to a person who is not famous in their own right. As an example I'm struggling with the title for a page I created on Munir Hussain and victims' rights. If someone is famous or infamous in their own right, such as J. K. Rowling or Papa Doc Duvalier, then a biographical entry of them is clearly the right way to go. However Munir Hussain is not famous in this way and, in my view, anything which is not relevant to the burglary and retaliation should not be in this Wikipedia entry.

OTOH if it is an event that is notable, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, then the entry should be about the event and titled as such. But the event concerning Munir Hussain was about a burglary in High Wycombe, and clearly 2008 High Wycombe burglary is not a good title :)

I think the title as chosen: Munir Hussain and victims' rights, balances identifying the event, which people primarily identify or "google" through Munir Hussain, and signalling that it is not a biographical entry about Mr. Hussain.

The inconsistency in titling is ironically shown on Munir Hussain's page with the link to the main entry on Tony Martin (farmer), which looks like it should be a biographical entry about Tony Martin whilst it is really all about his violent response to burglars on his property and the consequences.

So should the title be Munir Hussain and victims' rights, signalling that it is not a biographical entry, or Munir Hussain (businessman) to be consistent with Tony Martin (farmer)?

Aarghdvaark (talk) 18:38, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

good question - not sure. Munir Hussain victims' rights controversy? 2008 Munir Hussain burglary? 2008 Munir Hussain controversy? If it's not a biography, I suggest it's better not to be categorized with Category:Living people or Category:XXXX births (which are for people) Dsp13 (talk) 19:25, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

My site www.aathavanitli-gani.com is a 100% non-commercial, no-profit site, dedicated to preservation of lyrics of old, memorable Marathi songs. It has only lyrics and does not play any audio. It does not violate any copyrights. I am running this site for almost 7 yrs. In short, this site is not for any personal or commercial gains. You may check this.

Since Wikipedia (English) has specific pages for Marathi poets, composers and singers, etc. it would be complimentary information to know all the details of their work, such as the songs they have written, composed or sung, etc. www.aathavanitli-gani.com is a definitive resource on the web for all Marathi songs and their related information.

Also Wikipedia (Marathi) (http://mr.wikipedia.org) has already thoroughly wetted www.aathavanitli-gani.com and granted access to add links of this nature.

Please feel free to check out the website to verify the claims I have made about and allow me to put external links on related pages of Wikipedia (English).

I repeat this is only for preservation of Marathi language. Thanks and regards, Aathavanitli.gani (talk) 04:57, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Aathavanitli.gani

Place/country of birth

I couldn't find the respective information in the project page, but maybe there is a WP policy out there someone of you knows about.

I stumbled across the issue in the article on Rudi Dutschke. His place of birth is Schoenefeld, the small city where former East Berlin's airport is located. And here we are: Dutschke was born in 1940. At this point in time "East Germany", which is given as his country of birth, did not exist yet. The official name of Germany was "Deutschen Reich" then (until 1943 when briefly switched to Grossdeutsches Reich). In 1949 Deutsche Demokratische Republik (GDR) - informally called East Germany in by people in West Germany - was founded. Dutschke lived in GDR until 1961, moved to Berlin (West), and later to the UK and Denmark, where he died in 1979. GDR ceased to exist in 1990. So East Germany neither was in existence when he was born, nor is it in existence now - and is a colloquial expression, anyway.

So my question is: Are there conventions on the country of birth if countries change?

Best regards, jan --JanBarkmann (talk) 11:59, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

I think that's just a case of false info and it should be noted specifically where people were born since former countries have articles on the Wiki. I fixed the article, if someone has bothered writing a specific policy I'd love to see a link, too. Hekerui (talk) 12:16, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
