Lostintherush (talk · contribs) – It's my pleasure to nominate Lostintherush for adminship. Lost joined us in April 2006. He's best known as a prolific contributor to articlespace (having amassed an amazing 16 DYK articles), but also helps with RC patrol and vandalism reversion. His contributions have expanded the repertoire of Indian articles; more so, Lost has helped do this in a coordinated fashion through his work in the India, Indian States, Indian cities, and Indian districts wikiprojects. To this end, he's recently registered LostBot, which has been helping to stratify articles for WikiProject India. Above all, Lost is a kind soul in the community who welcomes new users, congratulates fellow editors on accomplishments and assists at the Help Desk. I think he would make a fine administrator and ask for your support -- Samir धर्म 00:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Co-nomination by Srikeit:
Its a real honour to add my co-nom here. I've seen this Lost evolve from a promising newcomer to one of the finest and most dedicated contributors I've seen around Wikipedia. Samir has already described his terrific efforts in vandalism reversion, mainspace editing, and his assistance at the Help Desk in his cogent nom above. I would like to draw attention to his significant contributions Articles for Deletion discussions as illustrated here and here. He also does a commendable job of maintaining WikiProject Deletion sorting/India. [1] and [2] are fine examples of his prudence and willingness to help out with janitorial work. I firmly believe that Lost will make a excellent addition to the sysop pool. --Srikeit (Talk | Email) 14:06, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Co-nomination by Sir Nicholas:
I will echo with Srikeit here – its a great honour to co-nominate Lostintherush indeed. Lost is a terrific and dedicated editor to the encyclopedia. He has all the makings of a great sysop and I believe that the tools, if given to him, will be used for good. Since April 2006, he has amassed over 6800 edits and continues to amaze us with his great editing skills. Lost has shown a great understanding of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and has helped get rid of many a POV edits in various India-related articles. His abilities at mediation are quite exemplery (see Talk:Khalistan) He comes out as a jovial and light-hearted person who has a great interest in building this encyclopedia. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 11:23, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Late co-nomination as promised by Blnguyen:
I would like to nominate Lostintherush. In addition to the DYK creations, he has a solid article record, improving coverage of Himachal Pradesh topics, with notable expansions ([3], [4] [5], [6], [7], [8]) and creating Economy of Himachal Pradesh, Geography of Himachal Pradesh, Chapslee Estate, Jaidevi, Mashobra, History of Himachal Pradesh, and helped to polish the Indian Institutes of Technology for FA ([9]).
He has a good understanding of the fundamental pillar of encyclopedic integrity, NOR ([10]), POV ([11]) and RS ( [12]), which are needed in order to make informed administrative decisions.
He has a very good understanding of image policy, through studying and correct tagging([13], [14], [15] ), which is appropriate as very few people understand the image copyright and deletion policy and the image deletion logs are permanently backlogged.
He is familiar with the deletion policy, making over 150 updates to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Deletion_sorting/India, (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Deletion_sorting/India&diff=prev&oldid=84601314]) and debates on AfD, showing an understanding that it is not a vote and would close AfDs with thought in tricky situations (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Keki_dadiseth, Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/St_Fidelis_College,_Lucknow). He has also help to police sockpuppetry (Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive135#Samir_Bhadva.C2.A0.28talk.C2.A0.C2.B7_contribs.C2.A0.C2.B7_page_moves.C2.A0.C2.B7_block_user.C2.A0.C2.B7_block_log.29).
Through the LostBot, he is helping with Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Automation to tag articles and assessments appropriately, and prior to that helped to process the output of Ganeshbot ([16]).
He has made more than 700 posts at the Help desk ([17], [18], [19], [20], [21]), showing an excellent ability to communicate and explain things to others - it is very important for an administrator to guide a new user to make the start of their tenure stress-free. This extends to Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance) and Wikipedia:New contributors' help page ([22]) and he is at all times calm under fire. He has also helped other users to get acquainted with WP:DYK ([23], [24]) and would be a valuable addition to the DYK backlog clearing.
He also is skillful in organising large janitorial tasks ( [25], [26], [27])
He is active in fighting vandalism ([28], [29], [30]) and spam ( [31]).
I am endorsing Lostintherush for administrative duties
- Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here: I accept, thank you for the kind words. -- Lost(talk) 11:08, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: I will start with my favorite areas on Wikipedia. The first place I dive in will probably be updation of T:DYK as it gets backlogged very frequently. m:OTRS is another area where I think I will be able to help as I feel I have a relatively cool head on my shoulders and replying to queries is another of my favorite tasks (Please see next replies for more details). I also see myself helping out at WP:AIV, WP:CSD and WP:PROD. Let me also however put a caveat. I am the type whose philosophy is - When in doubt, don't. So I will only tackle the obvious ones to begin with and go on to the more difficult ones as I learn more. I am learning about copyrights and fair use these days. So I see myself helping out in that area in some more time (but not immediately).
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: I got addicted to Portal:India/Quiz fairly early. The best thing that came out of it was my introduction to DYKs. Infact together, the participants on the quiz have created 12 DYKs!! I went on to create other DYKs and am pleased with each of my 16 DYKs. I hope to create many more well sourced, NPOV articles. The only (minor) brush I have had with featured articles was when Indian Institutes of Technology was at WP:FARC and I gave some feedback to the authors to improve it. See this and this. Of my Wikipedia space contributions, about 1000 are to help desk, new contributors help page and replying to CAT:HELP calls. I consider these to be my learning fields. I try to go through relevant policies and help pages before replying to queries, learning more in the process. Recently I have been approved to run a bot to help with WikiProject India and Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team. (I consider that to be quite an achievement as I have always thought myself to be technologically challenged). Learning and operating the bot has kept me busy through most of October. Prior to this, as mentioned by Srikeit, I also maintained WP:DSI for close to two months and WP:DSP for a lesser period.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: The closest I got to a conflict was at the talk page of Khalistan. There was some provocation but I backed off as can be seen in the diff. Subsequently, we actually managed to move the discussion forward quite constructively as can be seen here, here and here. Another time, I got a sort of a death threat for an article that I was marginally involved in but the person was quickly blocked and my wikifriends even managed to turn it into a joke (The image in the link was fair use, so I removed it from there).. As I said in my reply to Q1, I think I can keep a fairly cool head and encourage others to do so as well. I'd say conflict and stress is not something that worries me much.
Optional questions from Malber (talk · contribs)
- 4. What do the policy of WP:IAR and the essay WP:SNOW mean to you and how would you apply them?
- A: I understand the importance of WP:IAR well as I am myself a process professional and know the evils of instruction creep. At the same time, as the encyclopedia gets larger, policies become more necessary to avoid chaos. I dont see myself using it unless policies start resulting in bureaucracy. And due to the nature of Wikipedia and many good faith users around, I really don't see that happening anytime soon. WP:SNOW is an easier reply. It is meant only for the really obvious decisions. And if there is a good faith objection in the way of the decision, then I would not touch SNOW. As I implied in my reply to Q1, I am one who errs on the side of caution.
- 5. Is there ever a case where a punitive block should be applied?
- A: Blocks are supposed to be preventive and not punitive. As far as I can think, I dont see a situation where a punitive block should apply.
- 6. What would your thought process be to determine that a business article should be deleted using CSD:G11?
- A: I'd say that apart from advertising, the article would have to be unsalvageable to fall under this criterion. I have seen and explained this rationale to many newbies coming to the helpdesk and asking why their article about the neighbourhood store was deleted. There have also been times when I have directed them to WP:DRV if I thought the deletion could be contested. So I am quite familiar with this situation. And yes, I am aware that the criterion has been a matter of lot of debate on the CSD talk page.
