- The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:15th-century nobility. HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 01:27, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: This nation doesn't exist in the 15th-century. Per Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth "Commonwealth was established as a single entity by the Union of Lublin on 1 July 1569." Mason (talk) 23:16, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:02, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Merge back to Category:15th-century nobility, as there is clearly no intention to remove the subcats from that hierarchy. – Fayenatic London 18:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- That is a very good point. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:44, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:15th-century nobility, as stated above. --Blowwhite (Talk) 16:04, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Environmental parties in Hawaii to Category:Political parties in Hawaii
- Nominator's rationale: Only 2 articles, does not aid navigation. Neither party belongs in Category:Green political parties in the United States category because it either does not apply or is already in a subcategory. User:Namiba 20:18, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Duplicate category of Category:20th-century Italian politicians. Gonnym (talk) 05:51, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Technically legislators is a subset of politicians, but I am not sure if it is helpful to make that distinction in categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:19, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete – All subcategories are in Category:20th-century Italian politicians. It says it's a tracking category but that doesn't seem accurate. Mclay1 (talk) 08:10, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:National highways in South Korea to Category:National highways of South Korea
- Nominator's rationale: Agreement with main article National highways of South Korea. Would be C2D but a previous CfR failed due to disagreement on other sister categories, so nominating for full discussion. Paul_012 (talk) 04:31, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 01:40, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Pointless category which duplicates Category:18th-century French politicians. Gonnym (talk) 03:45, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:35, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. This appears to be part of some obsolete tracking exercise. – Fayenatic London 19:34, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: there are siblings for C19, 20, 21. Category:19th-century French politicians subcats holds Category:People of the Paris Commune which is not in Category:19th-century French politicians, but the latter was intentional on the part of Asilvering, see [1]. The C19, 20 & 21 siblings can all just be deleted, so you may want to append them to this nom. – Fayenatic London 19:34, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- My bad, I used hotcat for that edit and I guess it doesn't show hidden categories. I've removed it from the hidden cat now, so it's irrelevant to this discussion. -- asilvering (talk) 20:32, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Category:Villains in mythology and legend
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: keep and no consensus to rename. HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 01:45, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: As far as I know, "villain" is usually used in a literary context. We typically use "evil" to describe malevolent gods and there is already such a category called Category:Evil deities, making this redundant and pointless. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 05:06, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. This category is not restricted to gods or goddesses. This is supposed to be a counterpart to Category:Heroes in mythology and legend, and just as there are plenty of folklore heroes, there are folklore villains too. AHI-3000 (talk) 07:25, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- Support, demons are deities too (deities is broader than just gods and goddesses) and that leaves only one article in the category. That article illustrates nicely how difficult it is to classify a character as villain. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:03, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think that demons are typically classified as being "deities" or "gods". Deities and demons can both be spirits though. AHI-3000 (talk) 01:36, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Dimadick: What do you think of this? AHI-3000 (talk) 08:43, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose, in folklore there are several folk devils that can be covered. Dimadick (talk) 08:47, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- That should become part of Category:Devils which is already in this category tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:50, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

- Keep (oppose), as the old saying goes, not all mythological villains are evil gods but all mythological evil gods are villains. In other words, villains and gods do not necessarily travel in the same boat (Much ado about godding?). Randy Kryn (talk) 11:27, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- Keep and rename Category:Villains in folklore – There is room for expansion with characters from myths and folktales, e.g. Sheriff of Nottingham, that may or may not be in other villain categories. We use folklore as a broader term that also encompasses mythology and legends. MClay1 (talk) 04:53, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Thoughts on renaming? (I am currently seeing consensus that the category should exist, but that can of course change.)

- @MClay1: I wouldn't mind having a Category:Villains in folklore and moving villains in legends to it. But I disagree with moving evil deities and demons to it, that is really something different. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:53, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Surely all evil gods are villains within the myths they featured in? MClay1 (talk) 10:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- More broadly, I don't think ancient Roman or Germanic mythology belongs under folklore. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:22, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- I disagree based on the usual definition of folklore being along the lines of "the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community" (Oxford Languages). The Wikipedia article for folklore says in the lead that it includes myths, and the article for myth defines it as a genre of folklore. MClay1 (talk) 09:20, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

- Comment: Surely there are plenty of examples that could populate this category that are not evil deities. Looking only at Classical mythology, Antinous of Ithaca is a clear case, and the Odyssey alone offers plenty of other contenders. But there's a different problem, in that "villain" is a vague attribute that can vary depending on the story being told. Calypso (mythology) and Circe are villains in the context of the Odyssey, but does that warrant categorizing them as such? What about the figures from the Iliad, where there's no telling who's the hero and who's the villain? The concept falls apart when applied broadly, so unless the scope can be made clear-cut somehow this doesn't seem like a category that can practically be maintained. --Paul_012 (talk) 06:16, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- There are plenty of stories without villains. I don't think that means we can't classify the more clear-cut examples. MClay1 (talk) 09:15, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: no consensus. on the musicians category; but merge the harpists category as originally nominated. HouseBlaster (talk · he/they) 01:50, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Irish blind musicians to Category:Blind musicians and Category:Irish blind people
- Propose merging Category:Irish blind harpists to Category:Irish blind people and Category:Irish harpists
- Nominator's rationale: Only nationality category in Category:Blind musicians. Seems like an unnecessary intersection between nationality, musicians, and disability. Omnis Scientia (talk) 23:42, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:52, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- Lean Oppose. I agree that the 3x intersection isn't really defining (although there is a section decided to Irish blind musicians Blind musicians#Traditional Irish musicians). However, the parent category is large enough to be diffused by nationality.Mason (talk) 13:29, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

- @Omnis Scientia: see HouseBlaster's comment, it seems you need to revise the nomination one way or another. For example change the second as follows: Propose merging Category:Irish blind harpists to Category:Irish harpists and Category:Irish blind people. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:59, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- I Strongly oppose merging Category:Irish blind musicians; given the large number of articles in Category:Blind musicians, it should in fact have a whole set of subcats by nationality.
- However, I do Support merging Category:Irish blind harpists as proposed; I see no compelling reason to subdivide by instrument. Anomalous 0 (talk) 11:07, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
