Category:Germanic music

[edit]

The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:32, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale (music): WP:NONDEFINING WP:CROSSCAT. Apart from Category:Early Germanic music (which is a WP:SMALLCAT), there is nothing specifically "Germanic" about the subcategories, which are all in the Category:Music by country tree. Just because a Germanic language is the predominant language in each of these countries doesn't mean all their music is necessarily "Germanic", certainly not if it's purely instrumental. Or to take a particularly ridiculous example, most Category:Eurovision songs of Luxembourg are in French, which is not a Germanic language. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:34, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale (literature): Again, apart from Category:Early Germanic literature, this is mixing up Category:Literature by country with the predominant native or official language of that country that just so happens to belong to the Germanic language family. Much of, say, Dutch or German or Luxemburgish literature isn't actually written in Dutch, German or Luxemburgish, but Latin, Greek, or French (or nowadays English). E.g. Category:Books by Desiderius Erasmus are Latin or Greek, but in the Dutch books > Dutch literature tree, and there is nothing "Germanic" about them. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:49, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale (legends): Again, apart from Category:Germanic heroic legends (and Category:Legendary Norsemen), this is mixing up Category:Legends by country... Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:04, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to recently deleted "Category:Fictional Turkic people" per WP:NONDEFINING WP:OCEGRS. The very few loose items can be diffused/manually merged into subcats if they're not there already. (E.g. most "fictional Celtic people" are redirects, or already in Category:Asterix characters). The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Maya monarchs. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:43, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:C2C following recent CfRs more precisely renaming the subcategories, they are currently all Kings, monarchs, queens, or chiefs. Today someone else also renamed the main article to Maya Kings and Queens, so WP:C2D would also apply. I'm not sure it's the best title for the main article, it should certainly be lowercase k and lowercase q. But aside from Maya monarchs as main article title, Maya kings and queens would certainly be compatible with all subcategories. The "chiefs" one were also frequently called "kings", and the "monarch" ones only got that name because there were both kings and queens. So I'm adding it as an Alt option. Nominator's rationale: Related cats Category:Western European people, Category:Northern European people etc. were recently deleted per WP:NONDEFINING WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:OCEGRS. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:51, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:33, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Inappropriate WP:CROSSCAT that violates WP:OCEGRS: people should only be categorized by ethnicity or religion if this has significant bearing on their career. Having a native language that belongs to a certain language family is WP:NONDEFINING for an individual's career. It also assumes that all e.g. "Danish people" – here in the Category:People by nationality tree – are native speakers of Danish (a Germanic language), which is factually wrong. I can name countless recent precedents but the "Category:Germanic people by occupation" CfD is probably most relevant. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:40, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I'm just nominating 1 "of Germanic descent" cat as a test case to keep it simple. If it succeeds, I'll use it as a precedent for all related "Germanic descent" cats. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:42, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Follow-up of recently deleted "Category:Northern European people" and "Category:Western European people" etc. per WP:NONDEFINING and WP:ARBITRARYCAT. Upmerging to Category:Fictional European people seems better than outright deletion in this case. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:27, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:36, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The article on the MLS side is located at Portland Timbers, so no disambiguation is needed. Also note that this would be consistent with Category:Portland Timbers players. If the disambiguation were to be preferred, then the year should be used in the category name instead (similar to Category:Portland Timbers (2001–2010) players) and the player category should fall in line. Nominator's rationale: I created the target without realising that this category already existed. Anyway, I think that the name of the target is better as they were people from the state, not of the state. Would also help to disambiguate it from the 1944 Stalinist entity - the Provisional People's Government of the Republic of Poland. See also Category:People from the Republic of Poland (1989–present) (which I created today). Laurel Lodged (talk) 15:29, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle @Laurel Lodged I'll note that Polish category (connected through interwiki) translates here and for the other category below as "people related to". And it includes Soviet people, such as Soviet ambassadores to Poland or commanders of Soviet troops in Poland. Those people are not "from". Nominator's rationale: Eponymous category for a single radio station without sufficient volume of spinoff content to warrant an eponymous category. Apart from the eponym itself, the only other thing here is one show that it airs, so it's also a WP:SMALLCAT -- and judging by its article, the only potential for expansion would involve categorizing individual staffers, which would violate WP:PERFCAT. * Oppose countries with compound names Despite what has been written above, there is no "Consensus at recent cfds" that has definitively and universally "endorsed the 'fooian emigrants to boo' format". That imposition is still being robustly opposed. It certainly has no consensus in the case of those countries with compound names that defy an easy demonym. While their use is to be generally decried, they are particularly useless with multi-ethnic empires, many former countries and countries with compound names. In this instance, I oppose the nominations for Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia, and French West Indies. Down with the tyranny of demonyms! Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:56, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since no renames are proposed here I wasn't initially sure if this iVote on the right nomination. (If any of the target categories with compound names should be renamed, I'm open minded but that can be in a future nomination.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 14:24, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:PERFCAT)
The USO is an American charity where celebrities volunteer to entertain troops. According to that main article, during World War II alone, "the USO did 293,738 performances in 208,178 separate visits". The Robin Williams, Lucille Ball and Fred Astaire articles mention this performance in passing while Judy Garland, Zac Brown, and Salma Hayek don't mention it at all. (Bob Hope is the only one I found defined by the association, but his article is already well linked.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's no claim of WP:SMALLCAT here. Participation is so ubiquitous, I have no doubt this category could grow to thousands of entries. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:15, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
