japanese mailinglist archiving problem

[edit]

Hunter;

Thanks for your concern. I have just sent email to Jason Richie (he serves as an admin. of the mailman at bomis, as I understand) explaining what I learned about the problem (mostly from other, more knowledgeable wikipedians in Japanese 'pedia). So there's a possibility that Jason might be working on it, and solve it - though I have no idea how tough this problem is.

And in general, I am not knowledgeable enough to be confident of my translation of what others have told me in Japanese. If unclear, please let me know. I will talk back to them for more info.

The problem

There are two problems of similar nature. One is that some archived messages don't display right. The other is that subject lines in the index page (as well as the page for each individual message) don't display right. The way things corrupt are different for the main body and subject. So I assume they are different problems. But I'm not sure. In either case, what I write here is about the corruption of the body of messages.

There are four major coding system for japanese characters. UTF-8, EUC, Shift-JIS, and JIS. JIS is also known as ISO-2022-JP or RFC 1468.

Some email messages are encoded in JIS, and they always turn bad. Others are okay.

The reason is suspected of that some entities like double quote (") are converted into & quot; (without spaces in between). This kind of thing happens with & gt; & lt; & amp;

Suggested solutions

It is said that if those conversions are not made, the messages will display okay in the archive.

In a diferent context, another person said that the beginnings and endings of "Esc sequence" should be detected. I think he meant that detection is needed to avoid those conversions, but I'm not sure.

Alternatively, it is said, a process like the following can be incerted in an appropriate place as a solution:

  1. converting the whole message into another Japanese coding,
  2. convert those entities like double quote into whatever,
  3. convert everything back to ISO-2022-JP.

Regarding PNG stuff, I guess I can send you the screenshot of the troubled messages in the archive in PNG. But I am not sure how I can get the picture of how the message should look like.

Excellent explanation, it will help me a lot.

  • Could you please show me a specific example from the wikipedia mailing list.
  • Screenshots of both a bad example on wikipedia's list, and the same text but corrected (i will need this so that I know I have corrected the problem in the end). so i can compare how your browser renders it with mine ( i use mozilla 1.3 )

please reply here only

Text duplication

[edit]

Hi,

there seems to be a problem with the new features that causes text duplication in certain circumstances. I'm trying to figure out what it is. Your recent edit to the Village pump caused such text duplication. Could you describe what you did:

  1. Edit a section, or edit the whole page?
  2. If you edited a section, did you use right click editing or the [edit] link?
  3. Did you get an edit conflict?

Warranty disclaimers

[edit]

Tomos, thanks for your interest in warranty disclaimers under the GFDL that I have developed at Wikipedia:Copyrights and Warranty Disclaimers (proposal). Yes, I drafted the proposal hoping it would be discussed, but it has not been vetted yet on the mailing list discussions. It was also meant to be used in conjunction with: Wikipedia:Submission Standards (proposal). This developed out of the proposal to change the edit page boilerplate: Wikipedia:Annotated edit page announcement (proposal). I am going to post these links on the general Wikipedia discussion list and see what kind of discussion develops (as well as on the new Wikilegal-l list).

There is certainly the right to add warranty disclaimers under the GFDL. Do you have any standardized disclaimers such as the ones here on the English Wikipedia in Japanese yet? The ones that I have seen used include: Wikipedia:Content disclaimer, Wikipedia:general disclaimer, Wikipedia:risk disclaimer, Wikipedia:legal advice and Wikipedia:Wikipedia medicine standards. If you check where they are linked to you will see how they are being used and who has used them. Some have suggested that the risk disclaimer and general disclaimer are too strong (I also wrote these as first drafts and they have not been edited much). There does not seem to be any clear consensus on which one warranty disclaimer should be adopted as a general policy. The only thing is that according the GFDL it should be posted near the reference to the GFDL (which is why I have changed the edit page link to Wikipedia:Copyrights and Warranty Disclaimers from Wikipedia:Copyrights as this is more compliant terminology with the GFDL). As far as attribution under the GFDL, go ahead and translate any of these meta pages that I have drafted. I promise you I will not accuse you of violating the GFDL if you forget to mention my name in the summary box when moving it across Wikipedia name spaces (a good way to comply to the letter of the law, btw). — Alex756 00:25, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind answer, Alex. And no, Japanese wikipedia do not have any of those disclaimers yet, though I think it is nice to have them.

If I remember correct, you mentioned that GFDL ver 1.2 permits to have disclaimers. Does that mean Japanese wikipedia should first upgrade the license to ver 1.2?

I am also curious about the implication of the disclaimer on the fair use and inline linking discussions. Well, since I am a bit in a hurry, I would talk about it later. Maybe on the mailinglist.

Again, thank you for your kind answer, (and permission :-). Tomos 05:25, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

The standard license notice states that any later version applies, so probably 1.2. all ready applies on the Japanese Wikipedia. Besides adding the disclaimer thing and only requiring the five major contributors there aren't that many differences between the two versions, they are actually mostly clarifications. — Alex756 02:41, 31 Oct 2003 (UTC)

If you like, I can block you temporarily, so you can see what it's like. If the idea appeals, please respond on my talk page. -- Cyan 05:38, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Tell me when you want to be blocked and when you want to be unblocked. I am usually online from 16:00 to 04:00 UTC. Cheers, Cyan 08:07, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

I'm not I understand what you're saying. Was the original version a copyvio? It doesn't look like [2] now and the page history goes back over two years! Was it just one anon IP who put it in? If so, the page can just be reverted to the last good edit. I don't think two years of work can be deleted or am I missing something? Angela 00:02, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your attention, Angela. The first paragraph still looks like a use of the external web page to me, and I am not sure if copyvio in history (from the very first edition, in this case) should be kept.. But I don't think I understand deletion policy well. So as long as you understand the possible violation and think that editing is better than deletion, I don't object. Tomos 09:56, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I think in this case, it would be better to edit than delete it considering the number of edits it has had over the last two years, but I am going to list on Possible copyright infringements anyway to see what other people think. Angela 18:04, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. :) Tomos 20:18, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)

japanese interlang fiddle on hu:

[edit]
Quote from my talk page:

Hello. I'm from Japanese Wikipedia. I saw your message at talk:Main_Page (well, Japanese equivalent of that) [3]. As a responce to your message, some have already created a page ja:Wikipedia:Contact_us_for_non-japanese-speakers. Please feel free to inform us of your problems in detail.

If communicating to him is a problem, I can think of a following:

  • You would tell us a message to the IP user.
  • We translate it on japanese wikipedia.
  • You would block the user, with the message "kochira wo goran kudasai: ( URL)" meaning "please take a look at this."
  • For the URL part, you can point to the page on Japanese Wikipedia where the message to the user is shown (in Japanese), and where the user can possibly reply.

Or you may have a better idea. I am even not sure about the nature and scope of the problem. (From the few edits I checked, it seems that the IP user was working only on interwiki linking.)

Regards, Tomos 08:29, 25 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply.
Problem with blocking is that he's using dynamically allocated addresses, so I should block the whole provider (32768 addresses if I recall correctly). It would take a little long to do that. :-) But the idea is good, I try to ask around possibility to do something like that.
The problem isn't serious but still a bit annoying. If there's some progress I might contact you again about that translation.
Thanks. --grin 16:59, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Well, I am not sure how you can 2^15 addresses... but let us know if there's anything we can do. Hope things will become better. :) Tomos 20:48, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Press Release

[edit]

I see you contributed to the creation of the press release. Might you be willing to follow these steps, and send off the press release? -- user:zanimum

Thanks for the invitation. And yes, I did contribute a bit. But I'm more active at japanese Wikipedia - indeed, I have sent notices/ press releases to several major Japanese publications. As a result, one online IT news outlet covered Wikipedia, a book publisher inquiry, and a feature in TV show (though I'm not sure if the last one is in any way related to the press release). Well, that's all so far. It seems like we should learn some secrets from German Wikipedians! Tomos 04:41, 6 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Seventeen Year Locust

[edit]

Hi Tomos. Regarding your request on Wikipedia:Requested pictures: There is no page yet for a Seventeen year locust to put the picture on. Are you writing a new article about this topic? If there is an article I could contact a photographer on this site [4] that has a good photo here [5], and ask her for permission. Let me know. -- Chris 73 | Talk 05:53, 17 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there is a page Magicicada linked from Cicada, referred to as the so-called "seventeen-year locust". Would this be the beetle you mean? The US department of Forest and Agriculture has a drawing here [6], which is public domain as stated here [7] -- Chris 73 | Talk 06:10, 17 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Sadly enough, I am no expert on this topic, and I personally wanted to learn more about it (as well as to make sure Wikipedia gets good assortment of photos on this subject). But while I'm occupied with other stuff, User:Lupo added a lot of information and a huge photo. I should have placed another request somewhere for the expansion of the article. If you could add more contents, I would be even happier as a reader :-) Tomos 22:57, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I've made my response to your new question at User:Michael Snow/Candidate statement and discussion. --Michael Snow 17:59, 25 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

blocking a range of IP-s

[edit]

hi, ty 4 answering my quastion in the village pump. of corse i know, i can block his IP and we dont have a problem of to few admins (we have about 20 out of which usually 1 or 2 are active in any given hour). the problem is we block him and he returns with a differnt IP. how can we block an open proxy or a range of IP-s?
Gilgamesh he 10:19, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

If you need to block a range of IP, here is howmeta:Range blocks.
If you need to block open proxies, there are two tools that I know. One is User:Proxy blocker. I believe you can ask User:Tim Starling to turn it on; the other tool is called linky. I think it is from de.wikipedia, but japanese wikipedia got one with some sophistication. Ask ja:利用者:Tietew that. He frequents IRC #ja.wikipedia and that is the best way to reach him. (His English is pretty good, too.)
Please feel free to ask me further help. I hope your wikipedia will get through the trouble. Tomos 05:03, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I've just been to IRC and could talk to User:Suisui and User:Tietew they are anti-vandalism experts on japanese wikipedia (well, Suisui occasionally helped other projects, as I know). And here is my summary of their advices.

  • If the vandalism is frequent, the best option would be to ask developer to turn on the proxy blocker.
  • The problem with the proxy blocker is that it is a burden on the server. It may block innocent IPs as well.
  • Linky is now completely original of Tietew, but all the messages are in Japanese.
  • Linky needs an IRC channel, too, which is also a burden on the server.

We tried to read your deletion log at here:[8] so that we could say something more relevant to your situation. But none of us could read hebrew, therefore it was quite hard. Tomos 05:54, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

ty for your answer. the ptoblem is with 1 particular user. it started with pornographic articles and continiued with other ones. if we delete his article he rewrites it again and again. the only option we have right now is to wait untill he goes away and delete it afterwards. if we use the proxy blocker, wouldn't it block many innocent IPs as well? you said it may, so i want to know if many inoccent user will be clocked, if we use it. Gilgamesh he 15:35, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I don't know the exact extent of how much innocent IPs get blocked. There were some reports from Japanese Wikipedians and others. Regarding Japanese Wikipedia, it was not terrible. But still, collateral damage might happen. Tomos 23:29, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Just a follow-up. I went to IRC again and talked with some people about the situation, and their opinion is that proxy blocker is not available now, so you should try other measures like range block or manual blocking of open proxies. Tomos 00:00, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

thank you very much for your help. i hope the troll will not return, but if he does, we will be able to stop him now. Gilgamesh he 09:30, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

No, my pleasure. Please let us know about your experience when it is over.

copy rights

[edit]

hi, maybe u can help me again. i copied with permission the article List of Roman military terms and specified it in Talk:List of Roman military terms. somebody thought i am violating copy rights and put a remark about it in the article. i don't know the standart procedure in this case. where should i say i copied the article with the premission of the original author? Matisse's paintings

[edit]

Hi, I deleted a link to the Delectorskaya portrait, cause I cannot be certain that it was published in the Soviet Union and not in France. According to my juristiction (I live in Russia) Matisse artwork passed to the public domain on Nov. 3rd, 2004, i.e. on the 50th anniversary of his death. Perhaps changing {sovietpd} to {PD-old-50} would be a good idea. Ghirlandajo 13:41, 20 Dec 2004 (GMT)

I agree except that the expiration in many countries may come at the beginning of the next year (I wrote details on your talk page). I was unaware of PD-old-50, and that would be useful, indeed. Protection ends 50 years after the authors' death in Japan, for example. Tomos 03:59, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hiya! Yep, you got it in one, I mistakenly assumed that this image was PD due to being pre-1923. Thanks for changing it to {{PD-art-US}}. I seem to recall that I uploaded 1 or 2 other images of a similar nature at the same time as this one, I will try to track them down and fix them if they are in the same copyright situation. --Stormie 23:39, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

I came across Image:Corot.villedavray.750pix.jpg. Looking at your policy of dual-licensing your contributions with public domain, I am relatively sure that I can tag the image with template:PD-art. But I thought I would ask you first anyway. I agree so I've put the {{PD-art}} template on the Image Description Page. Thanks for letting me know about this - Adrian Pingstone 09:34, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

My pleasure :) Tomos 13:04, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You said:

Hi. I am currently reviewing license/copyright tags for art images. I came across Millet's sower that you uploaded. (Image:Milletsower.jpg) You identify it coming from Boston Museum of Fine Arts. I checked their site, and much to my disappointment, they, too, claim that all images are their properties and protected by copyrights. [9]
What should we do? I was thinking either to call them or ignore the warning and just tag the image with Template:PD-art, but thought I would ask you first. Thank you for your attention, Tomos 13:43, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not a copyright maven and don't know what to say. I try to be fairly careful about attributing sources precisely so these ambiguities are at least visible. I have relied on User:JamesDay's opinions... can't find 'em offhand... that works of art like The Sower cannot be copyrighted as long as they are reasonably faithful copies of the original, but I have no idea whether he's right. The big problem is that it is very clear that large organizations frequently make false copyright claims. And the big problem with asking permission is that you then have to deal with the likelihood that they will refuse to acknowledge that the work is in the public domain and will instead grant permission... and we can't use permission-only images.

I'm speaking from recent bad experience. I inserted, then had to pull an extremely appropriate illustration from the this version of the D'Arcy Thompson article. I am 99.9% certain that the image was published in 1917. I am 99.9% certain that it darn well is in the public domain in the U. S.. Furthermore, strange but true, the printing I have, a 1960's printing of the 1942 edition, contains no copyright notice. Unfortunately, I contacted Cambridge University Press which... well, you can read the whole sad story at Image:Darcythompson.jpg. I just don't believe Cambridge University press, but having asked them "isn't this in the public domain?" and having them say "no" I felt my hands were tied.

I'm going to just say a) I am not a lawyer; b) Millet painted "The Sower" in 1850; c) I haven't seen the original but since the image I used looks just like all the others I've seen, I believe they are all intended to be faithful copies of the original, not derivative works. That's all I'm going to say. Sorry if that puts you on the spot. [[User:Dpbsmith|Dpbsmith (talk)]]

Some Responses

[edit]

Tomos, thank you for your comments. I really think that the channels of communication have broken down. I approached Jimbo and Anthere privately but Anthere never responded. Jimbo did not really understand what I was talking about and thought that I was just trying to correct something that he thought was defamation (that was not really it). You know when you are a lawyer and an intellectual (I am both and this is something that most lawyers do not share, usually they are not interested in intellectual endeavors, just using words and thought structures to create systems of control). I really don't know what to do. This idea of "community" is very scary to me because it is the kind of idea that smacks of "communism". The Soviet Union Party had a great "Consitution" but there was only one "Communist Party". Now there is really no effective way to have a positive critical discussion of Wikipedia and its problems. Jimbo is too interested in being a superstar and being the "founder" to really care about the criticisms of people; he really does not like it when people criticize his "baby". I can understand that but the problem is that this has caused a lot of people to run away from WP. This is why I originally started the AMA -- to counteract this situation, not just Jimbo's response -- but I don't think anyone realized it at the time. Now it is becoming more active and I hope that people realize that by creating such structures and a "Board" that cannot be questioned by "Members" that the environment is one of more totalitarian control. When I suggested to Jimbo that he have some member representatives I thought these people would be more critical and would work to cause some kind of dialectic, not just agree with everything Jimbo told them. Some of the Board members think that it is easy to run an organization like Wikimedia but I am concerned like that Professor from Santa Clara that real contributors will be driven away outside forces will overwelm WMF and that the people who do contribute will be contributing crappy edits and WP will eventually become something like DMOZ. Really I can see the day when the "encyclopedia" is complete and someone makes a mirror of it and the edits start dropping off. What do we need WP or WMF for then? It will just be an empty shell. All the editors will be alienated from all the complex rules and all the politics and nothing will be left but a shell in Tampa that includes a bunch of bureaucrats. I have seen it many times before, organizations that outlive their usefulness because the board functions in a vacumn of self love and I doubt that the folks in charge of WMF are wise enough to know how to get out of this kind of situation. Regarding the comment about board members having to be organization members I was responding to some posts on the Chapter Committee talk page that Tim Starling had made (and seems to be accepted by Eric and other board members without critical thought. Anyway, they don't want my advise anyway, Brad and Jimbo have tossed me out with the trash. Good riddens to alex756, Long live King Jimbo! Alex756 03:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RfA questions.

[edit]

Hello Tomos,

Yes, the questions on the RfA were original to me and a few others were added or deleted from time to time. I wouldn't think there would be any problem with any material between Wikipedias, as my understanding has been that everything written on English Wikipedia is contributed under GFDL by default, unless stated otherwise, except material on personal pages. At any rate, you may assume that my non-personal writings may be used. Cheers, Cecropia (talk) 03:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote on Cecropia's talk page:

Hi. Thank you for your reply on my talk page. (And thanks for coming up with those questions. Japanese Wikipedians have been making use of them rather extensively.)
GFDL requires users (such as a translator in this case) to preserve revision history, for example. The license, as its preamble states, has the goal of attributing authors properly. Japanese Wikipedia's questions are probably not attributed to you, as far as I can tell. So it looks as if some Japanese Wikipedian created those questions. And they are licensed under GFDL, which means that the translator is likely to get credits, if anyone is, as if she is the original author.
Would you be fine with that? Tomos (talk) 08:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that's fine with me. I'm glad the participants at Japanese Wikipedia have found these so useful. Cheers, Cecropia (talk) 08:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
follow-up. No, I am not the author the Q.6 you pointed to. Cheers, Cecropia (talk) 05:15, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are a significant part of the art scene! We have finished one in English Fumiko Nakashima and working on others. Of course, the artists want the articles in jp.wiki but while they can do the translations, I cant help them with citation format or uploading into the wiki. Any help would be appreciated!Thelmadatter (talk) 14:02, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
