Burj kalifa sudden height increase on opening day

[edit]

How did the height go from 818 to 828 over night; the same night as the name changed. Did they stick a 10 meter spire out at the last minute like they thought the Chrysler Building people were gonna do to end the height record of the Empire State Building in their competition? Remember how the Empire was gonna be just a tiny bit taller than the Chrysler Building at first, then they added the dirigible/hat thing at the top. But at first they feared that there was gonna be some last minute trickery of height increases. Daniel Christensen (talk) 21:30, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is that it was probably 828 m all along (they never intended to release the height, but it was, as 818 m). Then they decided to reveal its height as ten metres taller than everyone thought, making it marginally more exciting. --timsdad (talk) 23:06, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha "marginally more exciting" I LOL'ed at that. Thanks. So do you think they purposely "accidently" realeased the height as 818 to surprise us with the 828? 74.44.130.237 (talk) 04:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, if I was going to release a height I would say at least 50 metres lower than the actual height, then people would probably be more excited. The 818 could have been leaked by someone who caught a snippet of conversation from the developers or something... --timsdad (talk) 05:08, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WHY was the Taipei 101 not in this list?

[edit]

List of largest buildings in the world I added it; and not only does it clearly rank, it is the LAST thing I would expect to be left out as it is a huge record holding skyscraper not just some random dumb huge warehouse. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:11, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ya know what I mean, like who's gonna take the time to find the floor area of every gigantic warehouse to see how they rank? It would be feasable for a mistake to be in the article such as a building being left out; but not one such as the Taipei 101. The fact that a tall and relatively narrow skyscraper even ranks is amazing; I can't believe it was left out. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:13, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS it's number 25, the Willis Tower ranks at 23, that's the coolest skyscraper I think; cause it's in America and so huge and boxey not just a giant triangle like the Burj Dubai. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:14, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lists like those are generally incomplete because buildings are only added by people who know them and feel like editing Wikipedia. Maybe it just never occurred to anyone to add it to the list... I mean, it's not one of the highest ranked buildings there. --timsdad (talk) 06:15, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but for what it is, how could you miss it? Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if maybe there is some stipulation, something I missed. I found nothing in the discusssion about it. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:29, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mile-High Tower

[edit]

Sounds like this one is actually feasible, unlike the Nakheel Tower. Or is it; is there anything that suggests or had it even been brought up the issue of load bearing walls; is the Burj Dubai near that point? Or a 2000 foot steel lattice broadcast tower: Near the crushing point? Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This problem was already met with that triangle shaped stone building in NYC from years ago; one of the first skyscrapers; it got to the point that stone or wood or whatever had to be so thick to support the weight it was impractical. How about steel and concrete; can it be a mile you think, or even a kilometer. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You probably don't know the answers to these random questions and I hope not to annoy you, but I thought maybe you might know of an article perhaps or something that you could point out to me. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I can't help with any of that, I'm afraid. With the triangle-shaped building from NYC, do you speak of the Flatiron Building? --timsdad (talk) 06:53, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I do speak of the flatiron. Remember the 1950's proposed Illinois Tower to be like a mile high and it was somewhat considered structuraly unfeasible. Mostly it was financial, though. Daniel Christensen (talk) 06:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I very much doubt they would have had the technology to construct the thing anyway. --timsdad (talk) 07:01, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The tallest building has appear on 2010. What's next (in 10 years later)?

[edit]

We all now in Dubai, Jan 1st 2010, there is the tallest building in the world, isn't it? We are grateful that its building named by the Burj Khalifa. The prince has worked so hard and successfully create this building with a lot of effort in his territory. By the stand of Burj Khalifa, we hope not only the greatest of its architecture that's famous but also open-minded of anyone who think that Middle-East region has no opportunity to grow. The prediction if the biggest development wouldn't come from Middle-East has no strength anymore. Nowadays, world has been opened his eyes that Middle-East is prepare to blow up the greatest. We consider by the broken down record of the tallest building in the beginning of 2010, what would it be in ten years later (2020). The phenomena create to be predicted. We see if the superior country could be frightened by the growth of Arabic countries. They are focusing on Iran nuclear development but no ideas about creativity and innovation in Middle-East region. We hope that the new brightest world in Middle-East inspiring many countries to make the most effort so we can see there are several amazing creature in 2020. Burj Khalifa

[edit]

I think I know what happened to the tower. I think it's possible that Abu Dhabi may now own a large portion of the "dubai experiment", and this is being done in a none-too-subtle way to embarass Emir Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Thoughts?

Enjoy the muffin. =) --PlatoCantRepent (talk) 04:03, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is possible, but I don't think we can include any of this speculation in articles unless it is backed up by reliable sources. --timsdad (talk) 04:22, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree completely, which is why I put it out there on the talk page. If it gets deleted, it gets deleted. There is however a large debt that was just paid off, so one way or another, Khalifa owns Dubai. I think there may be a leak soon. For the record, Sydney's Northern Beaches.--PlatoCantRepent (talk) 05:28, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My question

[edit]

It's simply: if I stood at the base of the Burj Dubai, what would my elevation be? Daniel Christensen (talk) 21:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Put simply, I don't know. I know my other answer was only referring to Burj Khalifa's proximity to the beach, but I gathered this would suggest the base of the building was not much much higher than sea level. Probably less than 10 metres. --timsdad (talk) 02:40, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PING AN

My references

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you edited my references on the Adelaide United season 2010–11 page. What was the reason behind changing the format of all the dates by the way? And each individual A-League club website is still owned by the A-League, thus the 'publisher' and 'work' fields were filled out accordingly, so I don't understand why you removed them either. - RedsUnited (talk) 09:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My reason for changing the dates is that the British format of dates is preferred in Australian articles to the US date format. I thought that because all of the articles on the Adelaide United website were written by Adelaide United and not the A-League, (although the A-League does run all of the teams' websites) the publisher should be Adelaide United although I'm willing to change that back. As for the rest of the empty fields, they are unneeded and only increase the load time so it was obvious why I removed those. --timsdad (talk) 09:37, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I've just been using that dating system by default for all my references, but am willing to change them to suit that logic. As for the 'publisher' field, it'd make more sense to include it as it will help with articles referenced in other A-League club websites too. And cheers for removing the redundant fields. - RedsUnited (talk) 10:03, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I suggest getting refTools. It's very easy to use, and uses the correct dating system. --timsdad (talk) 10:13, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The reason i changed the logo is becuase the one that you added is not the right logo. This logo is an adaption made on paint. Busan Lotte World Tower and Incheon Towers.

[edit]

Hello Timsdad. I write to you, because I know you have knowldges about skyscrapers. Recently I disussed with a few guys of skyscraperpage.com. The Busan Lotte World Tower is after my knowledge not U/C. Those construction site you see at the image taken by Softjuice is not the tower, it´s the sourrounding shopping-center. Here an intersting link: [1]. Those images are taken on January 4th of this year. There is no construction going on. The 151 Incheon Towers are as well not U/C. Some photos from the fourth quarter of last year show this: [2]. Several more sources: [3] and [4]. We should delete them in the U/C list of the List of tallest buildings in the world. But I don´t want to begin an editwar or an argument with Softjuice again. Jerchel (talk) 14:28, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know first-hand evidence from these images should be enough to prove that the buildings aren't under construction, and I do trust you and the images, but I'm afraid it is what classifies as original research and we can only use reliable sources to confirm the buildings' statuses. --timsdad (talk) 07:41, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did look into that when the edit was made on the talk page. I'm not sure what take the article has on the discussion, although it looks as if the writer might believe there is a connection between Goethe's birthday and the height of the building, unlike the rest of us. I guess we have to watch what we say around here... --timsdad (talk) 00:39, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

burj khalifa

[edit]

I wanted to update the burj khalifa page in keeping with the interesting side-facts already on the page, perhaps you can add, or let me know how since the page is locked.

Burj Khalifa park

Burj Khalifa is surrounded by an 11 ha (1,200,000 sq ft) park [insert here...]

designed by SWA Group of Sausalito, California which has created landscaped urban plans for other skyscrapers including the Shanghai Grand Tower, Shanghai, and the Zero Energy Tower in Guangzhou.[cite here article in Emirates Business, see below...is basically the cite for all the new text] The Tower Park echoes the core design concepts of Burj Khalifa and the symmetries of the desert flower, Hymenocallis.[67] [delete here the sentence "The park has six water features, gardens, palm lined walkways, and flowering trees" which is redundant to other text]

Befitting the harsh climate, which is not desert given the proximity to the coast, the Tower Park includes not only Hymenocallis but also Ficuses, Pseuderanthemum and similar flora. Palm trees identify the main circulation paths of travel and frame the edge of the landscape along the lake. Olive trees also populate the landscape to enhance pedestrian walkways and provide shade.

The landscape plan was expanded to include 3.5 km of Emaar Boulevard, which connects all major Dubai destinations including the main vehicular access to the Burj Khalifa. The wide boulevard’s double-row date palms and pedestrian-friendly commercial areas are intended to establish a world-class avenue as recognized as the Champs-Elysees, Park Avenue or the Ramblas.

[pick up the following existing text, though you may want to delete the ending mention of water features since it's a redundancy to text in the prior paragraph headed "Dubai Fountain"...] At the centre of the park and the base of Burj Khalifa is the water room, which is a series of pools and water jet fountains. In addition the railing, benches and signs incorporate images of Burj Khalifa and the Hymenocallis flower. [68]WET designers, who also developed the Dubai Fountain, developed the park's six water features.

Sockpuppet Help

[edit]

Hi. I've been having trouble with two editors, Alohahell and Softjuice. I believe they are sockpuppets and I also believe they are related to a former editor (Tnaniua) who was banned for sockpuppetry. They all seem to share similar editing patterns with Korean buildings, Samsung, and accusing anything they don't agree with as vandalism. Also looking at their contribution histories, I see some patterns that may be evidence of this. I saw that you had issue with them before, and I was wondering if you have any evidence to help support a SPI case. At the very least there is some meat puppetry going on, and it's very frustrating for me as an editor. Anawrahta (talk) 05:22, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought I'd let you know about this; in case you didn't already know. Here is their promotional video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U738MYMkk_I Daniel Christensen (talk) 04:38, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was considering creating an article on it a while back when I first watched the video. I decided against it because I couldn't find any evidence supporting its official proposal. I'm glad to see it's been created now though, and I do like the video - even though I can't see it being built anytime soon. Thanks, timsdad (talk) 07:31, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Is the "U.S. cities containing buildings 700 feet (213 m) or more in height" template on List of tallest buildings in the united States still accurate? Also it's not updated for many cities. US cities. It's actually really bad, in fact, and it makes it so almost all list of tallest articles here, the majority of which rely solely on emporis, incorrect. I added the little criticism thing to the emporis article. Daniel Christensen (talk) 18:28, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Tallest Residnetial Buildings in the World

[edit]

There is an ongoing discussion on the talk page of this article between me and User:Longwayround. And there is a need of third party opinion, the discussion is over the following subjects:

  • Reliable sources, the user User:Longwayround, claims the sources (CTBUH, Skyscraperpage, and Emporis) are not reliable and he says that there is a need of more secondary and tertiary sources.
  • Topped out status of Princess tower. (As per Emporis the toweris topped out, but elsewhere it is mentioned as under construction)
  • Grammar of the article.
  • Ranking of the buildings.

Your opinion over the discussion at the talk page of List of Tallest Residential Buildings in the World will be highly appreciated.

Hi Hope you will be fine. I have nominated List of tallest residential buildings in the world for featured list status. I have really worked hard and improved this article enabling it to achieve FL status, however i want your help to make some copy edits in order to improve its grammatical mistake, if any, as English is not my first language.

Invitation to Adelaide Wikipedia Users Group meetings

[edit]

Hi, in case you're not already aware of it, a group of Adelaide Wikipedians has been meeting on a monthly basis since April, with the aim of improving the scope and quality of articles on South Australian topics. We meet at UniSA's City West campus, and our 23 July meeting will have a guest speaker from the National Trust of SA.

This coming Sunday, 6 July, we will be holding our first Edit-a-thon. This will be an opportunity for new editors to come and learn either basic or more advanced editing from very experienced wikipedians, so if you know anyone who would like to get some practice, please let them know - and beginners will be very welcome. Sky Tower in Auckland

[edit]

Thanks for your response. However the proper place to discuss edits is in the article talk page. In the table where the Sky Tower is listed the last column states it is in Auckland. There is no reason to have 'Auckland' in brackets in the title column for the tower. Mousing over the 'Sky Tower' link shows it is Auckland and the last column confirms this. The actual title of the article for the Sky Tower doesn't have to be replicated in the list table. However I am happy for you to provide evidence in Wikipedia guidelines to demonstrate this otherwise. I have copied this text into the article talk page. Invite to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Timsdad or whatever I should call you. (Started off with that so I don't sound like a spambot roaming around.)

Sorry to sound like a walking advert, which I am, but I don't know how else to get popularity to my new website. Anyway, I recently started a forum about developments in Adelaide and I found that it seems to be one of your interests. It would be great if you could make an account on the forum I recently created to help boost it's popularity and overall active feel of the site.

You don't have to stay and be an active poster on the forum but it would just be great if you could make an account.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
