Mississippi

[edit]

Hi-the Embry, Mississippi article needs an article-many thanks-RFD (talk) 12:56, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I missed your reply about the Commons category links. I checked User:Dudemanfellabra/AddCommonsCatLinks.js and it expects a space "var sortkey=" " refnum...." (space is there for a reason, prevents sorting logic from kicking in and messing up the refnum). That's exactly what Template:NRHP adds, but not the Wikidata infobox template. I added the missing space. Might take some time to propagate everywhere, but I think this fixes it. Can you check? If this fixes it, I'll also do the same change for the other types. Multichill (talk) 16:03, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That seems to be working! It's definitely going to take a while before it propagates to all the articles - I had to null edit a Commons page just to test it - but I should be able to get back to adding the categories soon. (Of course, it's going to take a long time to get through that backlog.) Thank you so much for figuring it out! TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 20:20, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I had a bot do null edits on the list so you should be able to just edit now.
@Mike Peel: I think Commons:Template:Wikidata Infobox/core needs the same fix for the other templates with tracker categories. Multichill (talk) 18:24, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Hopefully the changes make it to the rest of the articles before I start getting into the ones that didn't make the 1000-article cutoff. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 04:26, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

GNIS template

[edit]

Hi-the GNIS template has been used for several years at Wikipedia. In the last day or so the U.S. Board on Geographic Names revised their website and the GNIS template is no longer there. Any comments, information, suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you-RFD (talk) 08:41, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that too, and right now it seems like the name search isn't on the website at all. I'm guessing they just haven't set it up after their website redesign, but if it's still gone after a few days someone may have to reach out to them and ask what's going on. (In the meantime, the download page still seems to be working, so the data's not completely inaccessible.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 13:04, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The GNIS for the Lipscomb (CDP) is: 2408616. There is an article about Lipscomb, Texas which is the county seat. This looks conusing. Again-many thanks-RFD (talk) 13:49, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
An editor tried to claim that the CDP and the community that houses the county seat weren't the same community, since the CDP includes a bunch of rural land that isn't part of the core of Lipscomb. While I'm not entirely sure why the Census Bureau did that, the CDP and the community are nonetheless the same place, so I fixed the article to reflect that. No problem. The Bureau courthouse actually is NR-listed now, by way of a historic district that was added last year. (And given their age, the other two certainly could be listed if the counties wanted.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 14:45, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's something I've noticed about Illinois: a lot of courthouses aren't, for some reason. Bond is 1884, Champaign is 1901, Douglas is 1913, Ford is 1908, Fulton is 1897, Hamilton is 1938, Hardin is 1927, Henderson is 1842 (!), Jefferson is 1939, Macon is 1940, Madison is 1913, Marion is 1910, Marshall is 1853, Massac is 1942, Perry is 1939 (its last expansion), Pulaski is 1912, Richland is 1914, Stark is 1856, Vermilion is 1910, White is 1883, and Woodford is 1898. And that excludes anything with much in the way of changes, whether smaller things like the 20th-century wings on Franklin or the 1950s side additions on Wayne, or the ugly rear of Calhoun. Indiana's done a good deal better job of that; when I attended a preservation conference in 2012, Randall T. Shepard spoke of how every historic courthouse in the state was NR-listed, either individually or as an HD contributing property. Nyttend (talk) 00:36, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wisconsin is also a lot better about that; I think just about every pre-1950 courthouse that hasn't been modified is on the NR. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 17:52, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes it's tempting to write to a local historical society and ask them to do a nomination :-) Take a building prominent in its community, built almost 180 years ago, never significantly modified, still used for its original purpose, and the second-oldest building of its type in the state...there's no way that it shouldn't be listed on the NR! Maybe there's not so much interest in the 20th-century courthouses, but Henderson, White, and Bond definitely should be listed unless there's some modification that I'm not aware of, and since lots of other states have alphabet-soup-agency courthouses, even ones like Gallatin (particularly significant as the core of a WPA-built town, like Greendale, Wisconsin) and Hamilton should easily qualify if they've not been significantly modified, let alone the pre-Depression courthouses like Richland and Pulaski. Nyttend (talk) 02:12, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect part of the problem is that a lot of those local historical societies are underfunded. Between the state's financial difficulties (which almost led to the Illinois Historic Preservation Division being eliminated) and how economically depressed a lot of small towns and counties downstate are, I imagine the local historical societies have to do more of the work on their own and are probably relying heavily on volunteers. That means getting less done, which means something like NR nominations might not be a top priority.
And oddly enough, I've been to Greenbelt, Maryland but haven't been to Greendale yet. I should find an excuse to visit the next time I'm in the Milwaukee area. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:53, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. As always, Chicago runs everything; the state would probably be run far better if not for Reynolds v. Sims. I remember my first visit to the State Bank building in Old Shawneetown and seeing signage for what was potentially a semi-permanent closure, and I remember seeing no gas stations and no convenience stores at the Cairo exit for I-57 while seeing several at the Charleston exit just across the Mississippi River. Meanwhile, have you ever been to the Cincinnati area and seen Greenhills, Ohio? It's the only one of the greenbelt towns that I've visited. Nyttend (talk) 00:14, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

[edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

 • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
 • Diversity winner
 • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tome, New Mexico

[edit]

You objected to some of my changes (but you reverted all of them regardless). To deal with my changes one by one -

 • Removing link Country. This is of no conceivable use to a reader. No-one reading this article on an obscure town in the US is looking for a list of countries in the world.
 • Removing link State. Same principle applies.
 • Combining adjacent links Valencia County, New Mexico into one Valencia County, New Mexico: This is as recommended at MOS:SPECIFICLINK
 • ZIP code to ZIP Code: this corresponds to the capitalisation used in the article itself ZIP Code. This capitalisation was agreed on by consensus after lengthy discussion.
 • Albuquerque to Albuquerque. How could you possibly object to that?
 • Including 'reported' in the link; because the link does not go to an article about Fray Atanasio Domínguez, it's to an article about the expedition he was part of and from which his report arose.
 • Adding a space between the initials of William W.H. Davis. This is standard practice - see MOS:INITIALS.

Colonies Chris (talk) 18:02, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't aware that capitalization was the standard for ZIP Code, and I missed the changes to initials, so I apologize for reverting those. As for the others, though:
 • Combining the links to Valencia County, New Mexico isn't necessary to comply with MOS:SPECIFICLINK, since we're linking to the Valencia County article either way, and we lose the link to New Mexico if we combine them.
 • Fray Atanasio Domínguez doesn't have a separate article, and the section of the expedition that's linked is about his biography, not his report specifically.
 • Bypassing redirects isn't necessary, so I didn't see a reason to leave that in.
 • The links to the list of countries/states are fairly standard for cities of any size.
TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:21, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
 • Yes, a lot of articles about places in the US have these useless country and state links. Being widespread doesn't make them any less useless.
 • The 'reported' element is important because, in the context of this article, the details of Fray Anastasio aren't important. What is relevant is what's in his report. Preferably also the piping should be changed to link to the report details, not to his biography.
 • Please see also MOS:LINKSTYLE "When possible, avoid placing links next to each other so that they look like a single link". There is already a link to New Mexico in the infobox.
 • None of the possible benefits of a redirect are relevant to this case. Colonies Chris (talk) 14:56, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest

[edit]
US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Hello TheCatalyst31,

Your script User:TheCatalyst31/AddCommonsCatLinks.js is no longer functional because it attempts to get an editToken from mw.user.tokens.
