Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: Promoting SOMine product in various articles. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Speedy deletion of Viscovery

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Viscovery requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Ros0709 (talk) 17:33, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Response to Ros0709

[edit]

Thanks for your message. I am a new contributor to Wikipedia, so I didn't know about the username policy. Frankly, it took me some time to see the conflict because I chose the name SOMart due to my work with self-organizing maps (SOMs), not because I am affiliated with the SOMine software. I have in fact used the SOMine software in my research, as well as other products. I included an entry for Viscovery because, unlike the R software (which I recently added to the data-mining article), there was no entry for the organization which makes this software. I was trying to be complete and remove the "red" link. Please let me know which areas of the article come across as advertising/soapboxing to you and I will work to improve them.

Perhaps the quickest way to resolve this issue is to change my user name. I chose it because I thought it would describe my area of expertise, but perhaps a more anonymous name is more appropriate for my future contributions to Wikipedia. SOMart (talk) 20:48, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
