License tagging for Image:Prudence-island-schoolhouse-in-2007.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Prudence-island-schoolhouse-in-2007.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:11, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Adding Categories
[edit]No problem on giving some tips, Wiki takes a bit of time to get used to, but pretty intuitive after that. To actually add a category to your article, you just type[[Category:American jazz clarinetists]] or whatever, within those brackets, at the bottom of your article.
Of course, it's important to make sure that such category actually exists first. A couple ways to do that. Maybe pick a similar article and see where it is: if I wonder where to file "Royal Enfield" a motorcycle manufacturer, I can look up "Harley Davidson" and see that there is indeed a Category "Motorcycle manufacturers", as opposed to "Companies producing motorcycles" or "Motorcycle companies."
Alternately, like with your German plaza article, you could go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Germany, see that there's a "Geography of Germany" section, and follow that until you find where the particular city is filed, or maybe a category called "streets in Germany."
You can use multiple categories, but try and have each category be as precise as is reasonable. That is, file "Toad in the Hole" under "British cuisine" rather than "England", "Food", "British culture", etc. All those categories ultimately lead to "British cuisine", so might as well put the article in the precisest category.
Hope this helps. Proper categorization and wiki-linking really ties all the Wikipedia articles together, allowing people to jump from article to article with ease. It makes every article you write a lot more accessible.
If you get interested in how the whole categorizing process works, it's kind of fun to go to WP:UNCAT and figure out where to file the "lost" articles. Neat little way to kill 10 minutes and run across some really interesting stuff lost in the depths of Wiki.
Hope this helps. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:43, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
