Harvard class to work on Particle filter... how to do this?
I'm a student in a Harvard graduate class on Particle filters. We'd like to do some work on the article and related topics and sub-articles, and since I'm the most experienced wikipedian, I've been asked to be the liaison. Our plan is to start by creating sub-articles for various sections and getting those into good shape; then, once that's done, using that work as a basis to reorganize and rewrite the main article. I expect that most of us would log in, but I doubt it will be required. Probably a fair amount of the work would be done by various students in my userspace, with only final results pasted back out to article-space. Does this sound like a reasonable plan to you? Are you the right person to be talking to? What kind of general notice should we post about these intentions and where? Thanks, Homunq (࿓) 21:16, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Homunq: Thanks for reaching out. I'm actually going to put you in touch with my colleague Samantha (Wiki Ed) who can get you set up with our resources and advise you how to proceed. In the meantime, I'd recommend that you visit dashboard.wikiedu.org where you can set up a course page for the class and learn about the different ways the Wiki Education Foundation will support your Wikipedia assignment. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:12, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi there! I'd love to help. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. If you want to review our support, definitely check out dashboard.wikiedu.org link that Helaine sent earlier or our website at http://wikiedu.org/teach-with-wikipedia/ to learn about teaching with Wikipedia. We would love to support you and your instructor in this assignment. I think our tracking tools would really be super beneficial for you! Hope to hear from you soon, - Samantha (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:33, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
A question about using Wikipedia in an advanced translation course
Hi Helaine,
I want to build up the Haitian Kreyol WP. I see that a uni in Boston is offering an advanced translation course for Kreyol this summer. Would it make sense for them to practice their skills by translating English/ French WP articles to the Kreyol WP? If this makes sense, how might the WP Ed program be able to help the professor? Thanks for your time NegMawon (talk) 16:05, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
- @NegMawon: Thanks for being in touch. Wiki Ed does work with translation classes, but our tools only track work that students do on the English Wikipedia. If this class primarily works on translating articles from English into Creole, then I'm afraid our support might not be quite the right fit. If they do end up translating from Creole into English though, then we'd be happy to help. Please let us know if you reach out to the instructor of this course, and if there is interest in working on the English Wikipedia. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:18, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Developmental Psychopathology (PSYC 500) at UNC
Students in this class are doing an editing project, but some of the things they are trying to edit are featured articles, such as Alzheimer's disease, and as might be expected the edits are generally being reverted. It might be necessary for you or Ian to step in with advice -- mainly that edits to low-quality or low-traffic articles are far more likely to be accepted than edits to featured articles or high-traffic articles. Best regards, Looie496 (talk) 16:25, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- Looie496 I've been in touch with the instructor. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:17, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Hello Helaine,
My name is Veronica Gonzalez. I'm a current student at La Guardia Community College. I'm excited to part of the Wiki community. It was a pleasant surprise to learn about what Wikipedia stands for and how useful and powerful it is to share knowledge with others. I want to thank you for supporting this class.

Post to article talk before or when publishing changes?
Dear Helaine, Students in my class (UConn EEB 4215 Physiological Ecology of Animals) are preparing final versions of their additions to Wikipedia pages this week. Is it best for them to now inform editors of these pages of their intentions (and if so how, e.g. on talk page of the articles the students will change)? thanks, Rico.schultz (talk) 20:11, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Rico.schultz: Your students can post on the article talk pages for the articles they're working on informing the community of the types of changes they'll be making. They can link to their sandboxes there as well. Ian (Wiki Ed will have a look at their work, and provide them with feedback as well. Thanks. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:16, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Helaine, I've let them knowRico.schultz (talk) 17:45, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Article Section of Course
Hi Helaine. Is there something that I should be doing with the Article Assignment/Availability section? We are working on a single article (Black Tamarin, Sanguinus niger) with each student working on different sections.Njclum (talk) 01:21, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Njclum: Do you mean the ability on the dashboard to assign articles? If so, you can assign each of your students this one article or they can do it themselves. Here's how. Let me know if you have any other questions. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:51, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
I may have made a mess of this
Hi Helaine, @Adam (Wiki Ed):, I got caught up in fixing these things, and I may have instead made a mess: [1] It started with correcting a misplaced comma, but the CATs ran away with it. I realized too late that I was messing with a work in progress, sorry! LeadSongDog come howl! 20:43, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Maynooth University course page deletion
There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. AugusteBlanqui (talk) 19:51, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
You created the course page for this course. The students are out of control and close to being blocked for edit warring. I reported here Jytdog (talk) 00:32, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
History-WGST215
Hi Helaine - I have a question about adding photos to my wiki article I am creating. I know I cant use basically all pictures from the internet, and I have one or two I found through google books that I want to use because there is no other option as there are no physical monuments in her name and she died in 1938...
What should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RingoMad67 (talk • contribs) 22:36, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
- You should look through our training module on adding media to Wikipedia. If you still cannot find the answer to your question, please reach out to either Adam (Wiki Ed) or Ian (Wiki Ed). Hope this helps. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:24, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Hi Helaine -- one of my students discovered an article with plagiarized text, namely Daughters of Liberty. She wants to edit the article as part of her work for the class assignment. Would it be acceptable for her to replace the current text with a stub instead? I want to credit her for finding the problem but she is already writing another new article and I don't expect her to write another one for the class assignment. I also don't want such a radical change in the article to trigger suspicion of vandalism etc. Please advise? Thanks. - @Ian (Wiki Ed): @Adam(Wiki Ed): can either of you advise here? Thanks. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:37, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Helaine. Also at least one of my students has (inadvertently?) published her new article on Sarah Cole instead of leaving it in her sandbox until the deadline. Is that a problem? Do you want the students to work with you to submit the articles for publication, or just Be Bold and go ahead on their own? Sorry but it's my first time having a Wiki Ed course and I'm still learning myself. Clio.at.work (talk) 15:37, 1 December 2016 (UTC)clio.at.work
- They can absolutely publish their work. They don't need our permission. IF they have questions though they should reach out to either Adam (Wiki Ed) or Ian (Wiki Ed). Good luck! Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:18, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi again Helaine, I have a question regarding my sandbox. I am writing a main article on a particular individual but I also wrote two stubs that link to this person; I am wondering where I should put these stubs, in my sandbox with the article I wrote or is there a serarate place for this?
thanks! RingoMad67 (talk) 16:14, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
- @RingoMad67: You should direct these questions to either Adam (Wiki Ed) or Ian (Wiki Ed). Thanks. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:54, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
I am writing to you because you created the course page. The students may need more guidance: See WP:HD#Moving A wikipedia page. —teb728 t c 11:38, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Teb728: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. @Adam (Wiki Ed): @Ian (Wiki Ed): Can you look into this? Thanks. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:12, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
