Speedy Deletion:Song for reconciliation

- Speedy Del is an appropriate option, however, it can only work if users are prepared to use it responsibly. Nominating an article for deletion without even looking into it is not responsible practice. Article management, over article culling needs to be the focus of Wiki-editors, and when it is necessary to trim excess articles, it should be done in a responsible manner. Liver Families article deletion
[edit]Hi Erechtheus - No problem at all with deleting my article - it didn't meet the encyclopedia criteria! And now that I know about the criteria, I agree with it. Thanks for the note on my user page.
For me, the issues with using wikipedia are that I am so, so busy, and the few times I have time to write I don't also have time to wander through all of wikipedia's rules. For me, the time choice is one or the other - contribute, or learn the rules, which can mean hours and hours of wading through policies which may or may not be relevant. At which point I lose the train of thought about what I wanted to contribute in the first place. Sometimes it's easier to contribute and then let someone who actually knows the current policies (and where to find them) edit.
...and BTW, I have a question - all of the users I've met so far are men? Nice men, but is that just an odd coincidence or are there more men using wikipedia than women?

Notability Flag on Alana Grace Article
[edit]Please note that Alana Grace's songs on MySpace have been played over 800,000 times. Many people are interested in her music.
With this in mind, I would be grateful if you would remove the notability flag on the Alana Grace article.

Revisiting Alana Grace
[edit]Given that more music is being marketed and sold on-line, I would argue that plays on MySpace should be one criterion among several for notability. Perhaps that policy needs updating, especially since artists will soon be selling music directly to the public by way of MySpace. Please see the article on this in the Washington Post. [1]
Please note that Alana Grace has a song on the soundtrack CD for the movie "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" (a movie that grossed $40 M). I would argue that being included on the same CD as established artists such as Chantal Kreviazuk and Natasha Bedingfield is itself a mark of notability - especially when a number of the reviews (e.g., on Amazon) said that the song by Alana Grace was one of the strongest tracks on the CD. Some even said that the CD was worth buying for that track alone. In fact, her song on that soundtrack/CD attracted so much attention that she was invited to sing it live on national television (on the Today show on NBC). That CD has been out for about 18 months and is currently ranked about 7,000 on Amazon - not bad for a CD that has been out that long. The Amazon reviews are at: [2]
As for tours, Alana Grace toured California last summer as the opening act for Ashlee Simpson, which gave her some visibility in that market. However, I wouldn't say that she sounds anything like Ashlee Simpson (much better, much stronger, in my opinion). Listen to her songs on MySpace, and see what you think.
On a point of more general policy, I would argue that the Wikipedia is particularly useful for finding out about new and emerging artists, and it would be good to have some flexibility in evolving, adapting, and applying the criteria of notability. For my part, I am always looking for new music by new artists (e.g., by following the "Listeners Also Bought" leads from one singer to another) - and whenever I do find a new artist, I always start with the Wikipedia article (if it exists) on that singer.
Notability Criteria for Musicians

PS: The comments on that talk page mostly refer to artists outside the USA. Generally, I write about Canadian musicians - but I believe in recognizing quality wherever it is found, which is why I wrote about Alana Grace, an American musician (whom I think will do very well here once her CD comes out in early 2007).

[edit]HI I'm just letting you know that I'm acting on behalf of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project in creating their page for the encyclopedia. The content is copyright to the non-profit organization therefore with prior permission I was able to go ahead and "create" the page as for the image I do not know how to remove/ re-upload it
So what sources are necessary for an album which is a stub. I can't think what information on there could possibly require verification. As you stated, I've searched and found many albums, some with actual information besides a track listing, which don't have references.
Quoting WP:V: "Material that is challenged or likely to be challenged needs a reliable source, which should be cited in the article"
I don't understand how a track listing of an album is likely to be challenged. Are you challenging the validity of this? If not, then WP:V says it doesn't require a source, to my reading.

[edit]Based on what the article says, it's a real radio show, not a podcast (the article says that "The show is also available from the website as a podcast" (emphasis mine)). Also, please understand that when I say that there was an assertion of importance, I don't mean it should stay; I just mean that it falls short of the standard required for an A7 deletion. It's quite possible that this thing would fail at AFD, and I wouldn't object if it did; it's just that there's enough there to at least warrant discussion. Notability of New York Pathological Society

Or is this one of those games people play to try to manipulate stub authors into writing content? - How am I supposed to know there are 20 million members? There is one reference that establishes that there were once 200 or so members. Big deal. I belong to larger professional societies that have no business with an article. If they do indeed have 20 million members, that sounds like a notable organization. It's not manipulating anyone to point out that this project has standards, the article in question is not up to those standards, and somebody may eventually decide deletion is best if nobody wants to write anything more about the society. The society doesn't have 20 million members - New York State has twenty million people in it and this is the society for pathologists serving that entire population. - A professional society's status as your favorite or the subject of your attention or whatever does not excuse it from Wikipedia's standards. Read WP:Notability. It applies generally. I'll also note that at the time of the application of the template, the article said nothing about the society being a going concern for 200 years. An article about an organization needs to say more than it's old and that it once had a couple hundred members. Reviewing your edit history is going to somehow demonstrate that you didn't just try to send me off on a different wild goose chase poring through WP:OWN? Or it'll somehow prove that this isn't a matter of your taste in stubs, or that you don't push other editors around at your whims? You're compounding a red herring with another red herring. I understand how to write Wikipedia articles just fine - both full articles and stubs, your understanding of the distinction seems to be quite lacking and you seem to think it's your job to manipulate people into adding content to stubs - and even if I needed to be taught about it you clearly do not have the integrity or the impartiality to teach anyone about it.
I did take a look at a few articles you created and it's pretty laughable considering the pose you're striking; if you do actually believe you're exhorting some sort of intelligible standard here you're applying considerably lower standards of notability to things you write yourself. A two hundred year old pathology organization that had 215 members in 1908, which would be a large percentage if not a majority of all the pathologists in the entire state - or any state - in 1908, and which was founded in 1844, which despite your claims to the contrary it said from the beginning, is just a little bit more notable than Bart Thomas. I am not a pathologist or a medical professional of any sort, by the way - you don't need to be to know that the information I put in that article demonstrates notability. (Not that establishing notability has anywhere near as much to do with the content of the article as you seem to think, if you were to actually read the policies you keep telling me to read.)
Nor does demonstrating notability have anything to do with what kind of audience a stub or article is written towards. Again, if you think a one-sentence stub would be better if it was written towards a Missouri audience, feel free to expand the article that way - don't toss around notability templates and tell the author to go off and read policies and read your edit history to try to persuade him to do it for you.
Next time you have an aesthetic opinion to voice do it on the talk page, or make the changes you want, don't hide your personal preferences behind policy templates and allusions and a patronizing I'm-gonna-drop-some-knowledge-on-ya-'cause-I'm-an-administrator attitude. Wikipedia is a bit heavy on people like that. - What I find truly amazing is that if you actually poured the efforts into writing the article that you pour into your tirades on my user talk page, you'd have easily established the notability you are bending over backwards not to establish in the article. Note that I'm not telling you that you HAVE to expand the article. As to WP:OWN, I'm referring to your possessive attitude over the article. That does not have to mean that you refuse to let others edit it. It can also mean you behave in the manner you're behaving when somebody suggests that there is an issue with an article. That's what I see when I see the words, "one of those games people play to try to manipulate stub authors," and, "don't splatter the article itself with messages spuriously threatening deletion," in your first message to me about the article. Now, we really have two options here. If you'd like to constructively discuss this article or anything else, I welcome it. If you don't, I wash my hands of these conversations. Your choice. Complaints about me "belittling your contributions to the project", eh? This makes me laugh as well because to read all of the comments on your talk page and to look through your edit history, your contributions to the project consist almost entirely of "belittling" the contributions of others here! You're getting a little of your own medicine - an editor keeping an eye on the actions of an admin, instead of the other way around for once - and it's evidently too much for you to take! All the objectivity and supposedly impartial evaluation get thrown right out the window in the face of your own behavior. Don't try to claim that I have done anything other than repeat exactly the original contents of that article here, which you took it upon yourself to belittle. There's nothing more to be found here than in the article, that assertion is more chaff from you. You either intentionally or in gross error tried to label that article as inadequate and policy-violating and now you're trying to excuse yourself. You're even trying to act as if administrative behavior isn't a permissible topic for discussion or something, calling my documentation of it "amazing" as if spending effort curtailing inappropriate behavior like this is irrational or ignoble next to your own incessant haranguing of editors.
This isn't about the article - I know nothing at all about the NYPS and care nothing about the article, they're a footnote in another article I'm writing - this is about you and your behavior. I think perhaps you mistook me for a casual editor because I had written a one-sentence stub and you decided I'd be good fodder for your machinations. Wikipedia has more than its share of people who come here to push editors around and get their rocks off on feeling authoritative and making trouble for editors. You're a member of that group as this incident and your record shows.
From your aghast, evasive, and clumsily policy-flailing reaction to what I've pointed out here I must infer that no one has seriously taken you to task over to this behavior before. I gave you the opportunity to admit you'd either misread the article and its citations or simply made an error in judgment and you vigorously thrust those options away, so my speculations about your motivations on this are no more bad faith than any of the various "belittling" of other's work that you do. At this point I feel that an acceptable paper trail has been established and I hope that other people whose work you have "belittled" come across the evidence of how you react to the same sort of treatment.

Oh, I see I hadn't actually declined it- I came onto it from CAT:CSD, then proceeded to clean up the article, but I see it was actually the author who removed the tag. Lincoln's First Inaugural Address
[edit]Please leave it as it stands, unless you want to do the same redirect to EVERY ONE of the presidential inaugural addresses. This one is just as noteworthy as Lincoln's second addess and I see no reason why it should be cut out. Expatkiwi 20:54 , 21 April 2008 (PDT)
Additional: a number of other presidential inaugural addresses are on Wikipedia (ie Washington, Adams, Kennedy) quoted in full. If these remain, then Lincoln's should as well IMHO

Erroneous copyright violation assertion
[edit]In case you actually aren't aware, a work published in 1908 is in the public domain (That page says that George Frederick Shrady was the author of that work. In the very first sentence on that page it says that he died in 1908.)
I see the further up this user talk page you're claiming that I'm engaging in "character assassination" against you... and yet you're the one placing completely made-up copyright violation notices on my talk page? Riiiiight. I welcome outside eyes taking a look at our disagreement and taking a look at my fact-laden, well-cited descriptions of your behavior over in Talk:New York Pathological Society. (Descriptions which I haven't made any fabrications in, as you have with this copyright violation thing.) So I say "bring it" the same way you did by starting the RfC.
One bit of advice, though: if my descriptions of your behavior are making you uncomfortable, the solution is to stop behaving that way, not to call a bunch of people in to spend time looking this all over because you think that'll provide you with some sort of PR damage control opportunity. I hope this fake copyright violation accusation thing has shown you that further craven action on your part is just going to dig you in deeper.

If you intend to pursue anything, I would start at Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution. However, I did choose to shrug it off, and limit my interactions with this user severely. I find him (her?) to be arrogant and hostile, and very disagreeable to other interpretations of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Furthermore, his persistence in directing assaults on a personal level, denigrating my character and being seemingly consistent at failing to assume good faith on the part of those with whom he disagrees, leaves me wishing to completely ignore him. If you find his behavior to interfere with the progress of Wikipedia, I would suggest pursuing it. But if it's just personal assaults, I would recommend ignoring it as much as possible. Heh heh, nice try Tony, whatever you meant to accomplish by this. As if we ever had any discussions about interpreting Wikipedia policy - as I recall you tried to twist my arm into writing content too, flinging link after link and threats involving deletion just like Erechtheus here. I did learn from that experience - on that occasion I let you force the discussion onto my talk page despite me openly questioning why you insisted on that. This time I've made sure that it's all nice and open and on neutral ground.
If I'm arrogant and hostile we're a pair. And Erechtheus makes three. But at least between us I can admit I'm arrogant and hostile, and my arrogance doesn't involve telling people they need to go read something, as both of you are so fond of. Nor do I try to conceal arrogance and manipulation with smilies and a hail of policy links.
Like Erechtheus you also don't seem to do your homework - I doubt that if you'd seen the list of things he's done, now including censoring an article talk page without following any of the policies on doing so (despite claiming he had, of course), that you'd be recommending it's in his interest to pursue any third party attention here.
A little advice fellas - the "good faith" you both like to mention isn't a matter of putting up smiley face templates and making pleasantries. It's not a license for you to be a jerk so that others have to ignore it. It has a great deal to do with treating others with respect. If you try to push someone around and then can't even show enough respect to admit you've done so, and say "here's a bunch of links to policy documents you obviously couldn't find on your own", no amount of blithe wording and smiley faces turns that into "good faith". Exactly how short on good faith Erechtheus is and how much he tries to use Wikipedia policy in pushing others around is now nicely documented, fortunately.

- As stated before, Wakaremichi is one physical disc (album) with a different set of songs than Spermargarita, which the title track (song) was re-released on. Japanese singles are usually released in succession before an album and the title tracks are then placed on the new album. The artist The Gazette have charted on Oricon. The song "wakaremichi" doesn't merit an article, but the physical CD Single of Wakaremichi, seems be the same thing as WP:MUSIC's idea of an "prominent album" released by an established artist. Charting somewhere is a separate qualification for an article. Does this mean that articles such as Duality (Song) and Mirrorcle World are invalid, as well as all of The Gazette's other singles? The likely reason that there is no specific citation for CD Singles is because they are not a major form of music distribution in the western world, besides as radio/media-use samples. The situation in Japan is very different and singles, and they are a valid form of sales/distribution, and are physical discs containing usually more than one song. Citation?
[edit]What do you mean it's not sufficient? It's an official site. How many sources does the article needs to have to be considered as reliable? Because of the limited financial possibilities the Association does a great job even to create a web-site such as the one that I posted. And of course there is little or no publication on the competitions of that level. The reliability of the source can be checked on the FFU web-site where you can find the link to the Association of Amateur Football.

I'm not sure what's best to link for grand prix. Maybe Grand Prix, although that's just a list rather than a discussion of the idea. There's a little bit of discussion on Talk:World Chess Championship 2011 where I agree with Bubba73 comment that a Grand Prix is usually a series of competitions used to determine a grand champion, but sometimes refers to a single event. Unref tag

2008 Orange Warsaw Open - Singles and other draw pages
[edit]I've noticed that you have added the 'primary sources' tag on several tennis draw pages. However, all of those pages (and actually all of the tennis draw pages on wikipedia) have a link to an official PDF version of the draw, either on the website of the tournament, or on the websites of the ATP or the WTA. In other words, all of these pages have links to 'sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications' as the tag says. I understand, by reading the primary sources definition, that these linked PDF draws may only be primary sources, but how is that not sufficient for these pages ? It's just that since those draw pages consist only of names and scores, and involve nothing more that what there is on the PDFs, I don't really see what secondary sources could be added, apart from, perhaps, matches reviews, which would be, in my opinion, completely out of place in these brackets pages (most tennis articles have links to reviews or official sites on the main article pages, though). Afd on Kirk
[edit]- I was told the third party IMDB link does not work but it does. The awrds link does list his show (the KMS show) very clearly. The WP:BIO notability says they have to be award-worthy. I added another third party link talking about their ballyhooed switching from 98 Rock to 105.7. Lastly, I don't understand why Kirk is nominated for deletion yet Mark Ondayko, R. Edward Lopez, Josh Spiegel, Mickey and Amelia.....all local personalities Kirk has worked with, have had wiki entries for months yet KIrk does not make it and he has had more exposure and is more verified and notably than the rest of them put together. WP:Hornbook -- a new law-related task force for the J.D. curriculum

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".
Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.
- Each casebook will have a subpage.
- Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
- It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
- Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
- I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

On Tuesday, 28 May there will be a community Wikipedia meeting at the United States National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland - with a second on Thursday, 30 May for those who can't make it on Tuesday. You can participate either in-person, or via an online webinar. If you attend in person, USB sticks (but not external drives) are ok to use.

An exciting month of wiki events!

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July
[edit]I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.
What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

[edit]The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Museum hacks and museum edits

- February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
- February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
- February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.
First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).
Now, I am very pleased to announce:
- Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
- Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
- Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
- Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.
There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

I am very excited to announce this month’s events, focused on Women’s History Month:
- Sunday, March 8: Women in the Arts 2015 Edit-a-thon – 10 AM to 4 PM
- Women in the Arts and ArtAndFeminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Free coffee and lunch served!

- An evening gathering with free-flowing conversation and free pizza.

- Friday, March 13: NIH Women's History Month Edit-a-Thon – 9 AM to 4 PM
- In honor of Women’s History Month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is organizing and hosting an edit-a-thon to improve coverage of women in science in Wikipedia. Free coffee and lunch served!

- Tuesday, April 14: National Archives Hackathon on Wikipedia Space with American University – 2:30-5pm
- See the latest work on the Wikipedia Space exhibit in the new NARA Innovation Hub and brainstorm on new ideas for a public exhibit about Wikipedia
- Friday, April 17: Women in Tech Edit-a-thon with Tech LadyMafia – 5-9pm
- Team up with Tech LadyMafia to improve Wikipedia content on women in the history of technology.
- Saturday, April 25: April Dinner Meetup – 6 PM
- Dinner and drinks with your fellow Wikipedians!
- Friday, May 1: International Labour Day Edit-a-Thon – 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. February events and meetups in DC
[edit]Greetings from Wikimedia DC!
February is shaping up to be a record-breaking month for us, with nine scheduled edit-a-thons and several other events:
- On Friday, February 12, NPR will host a Black History Month First Edit event.
- On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the Wiki Education Foundation to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting.
- On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
- On Saturday, February 20, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will host the African American Artists Edit-a-Thon.
- On Friday, February 26, Howard University will host its second annual Black History Month Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, February 27, we have three different events. In the morning, we're holding an Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. In the afternoon, we'll host our second February WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.
We hope to see you at one—or all—of these events!

Looking for something to do in DC in March? We have a series of great events planned for the month:
- On Wednesday, March 9, we'll host our first March WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle.
- On Friday, March 11, the National Archives will host the Women in the Civil War Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, March 19, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will host the Color History with the Smithsonian! event, and we'll hold our second Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
- On Sunday, March 20, the American Chemical Society will host the Computers in Chemistry Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, March 26, we'll host our second March WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.
