KATUTURA
[edit]Katutura is an informal settlement situated in the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek. The name katutura is a herero name which means we do not settle. The history and establishment of Katutura is a bitter and hard one, this is because it was established during colonial government in South West Africa now commonly known as Namibia. History of Katutura During the war when Namibia was under the colonial rule of the South African government, the Namibian people who resided in the Capital city Windhoek at the place called the old location were forced to move from the old location to a new place due to the upgrading of the Old Location to a place of whites only. This then lead to the people having no were to settle but to find a place to stay. This war or movement rather was a bitter one and resulted in war between the South African armed forces and the people of the Old Location. During this war, many Namibians lost their lives tragically and there after found a place to settle and this place was called Katutura “we have no were to go or settle”
Katutura’s beginning
[edit]At first Katutura was known as the place for the black community only. During this time before independence of the country, Katutura had no developments of what so ever and was equipped with black people’s schools and residences only. Katutura was regarded as a poor area that only “kaffirs” were allowed to stay, because that’s the name that black people were called. Well, people had to walk distances to their work places in town and therefore suffered severe touchier and humiliation along the way and their work places. People were constantly killed and abuses as well as had their houses destroyed by the S.A colonial rulers and arm forces with almost no reason what so ever. Katutura was back then a victim of tribalism and racism as people from different tribes were separated into smaller settlements within Katutura thus being deprived off contact with each other. The Wambo speaking people leaved in “Wamboe location” Herero speaking people lived in “Herero Lacation” Damara speaking people lived in “Damara location” and so on.
Katutura Today
[edit]Today, after the country became independent, Katutura developed day by day with major improvements such as the eradication of tribalism because before then Damaras, Herero and Wambo speaking people were separated and so on. Well more settlements came into Katutura such as Khomasdal and others which then made it a place to be. A lot of developments took place in Katutura which included the establishments of schools that offer a better education for our children. Schools in Katutura were regarded as blacks only school and are of low educational level but this changed for the better. Recreational facilities and high quality shopping malls were built to improve and develop the settlement. Today people from all works of life leave in Katutura.
