Appearance
Chard Borough Police was the municipal police force for the borough of Chard, Somerset, from 1836 to 1889.
Formation
[edit]Being so close to the village of Ilminster, Chard's ability to sustain a police force was invariably compared to its smaller neighbour, mostly favourably owing, in 1852, to the town's strong contingent of four paid Police Constables to Ilminster's single unpaid Parish Constable who was mostly incapable of dealing with crime and general unruly behaviour.
