Megrel-Qarto Civil War (2006-2012) (2014-)
[edit]The Civil War first begun in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti mkhare of Republic of Georgia on April 9, 2006. The war would then seep into Chachanistan on July 10, 2006. The war was between Megrelians, a Georgian people group, and Georgians. All of the fighters for the Megrelian side in Chachanistan weren't themselves Megrelians but rather their proxies. Most were of Meskhetian or Kartlian background (both being Qart groups themselves but still fighting for Megrelians as a way to achieve more self-autonomy and land). Also in Lagodekhi and near Zaqatala, few thousand Kakhetians (another Qart group) where fighting against Qarts. The Megrelian proxies at their height occupied most of Northern Chachanistan regions with intention to retake Borchalo from Azeris and were even set for the capital of Chachanistan- Tbilyerbak. Samegrelo proper even occupied Kutaisi and Batumi at the height of victories for the Megrelian side in December of 2010. Though in 2012, the president of Chachanistan, Dankerion Sagudava, managed to lead the army to break through the lines of defence of the Megrelian proxies with the help of Presidents of Republic of Georgia and Republic of Azerbaijan. Between August 9 and December 25, the remaining big towns occupied by the Megrelian militias in Chachanistan would be subdued and liberated in Operation Mineti. The towns being (in order of liberation): Rustavi, Gardabani, Bolnisi, Lagodekhi, Akhalkalaki, Dmanisi, Metsavan, Zaqatala, Šuša, Ganja, Kapan, and Nakhchivan. For the next two years there would be a ceasefire until the guerilla fighting would begin on 25 December, 2014, exactly on the two year anniversary of the defeat. Technically the war still hasn't ended since, but the Megrelians militants have control over just a few villages in Chachanistan and three municipalities in the Georgian mkhare - Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti.
