Introduction

Julian House is a UK charity based in Bath that offers direct support to homeless and vulnerable people in Bath and the surrounding area of Bath & North East Somerset.

Julian House provides a variety of services including a night shelter/day centre; projects aimed at helping those who are homeless to find homes and jobs; supported housing projects for a diverse range of vulnerable members of society; reintegrating priority offenders back into society; and services which aim to provide support and refuge for women and children suffering from domestic violence.

Julian House’s stated purpose is: to eradicate the need for rough sleeping; to enable those who are homeless and those who are vulnerable and at risk of homelessness to establish sustainable homes and lifestyles; and to empower all users of its services to achieve their fullest potential.(reference needed)

History

Julian House, or Bath Churches Housing Association (BCHA) as it was originally known, was founded in 1987 after the tragic death of a homeless man on the streets of Bath (reference needed). In response to this incident a number of churches within the city set up ad hoc shelters. The charity BCHA was the result of these efforts and they launched a public appeal in order to secure funds to set up a dedicated permanent night shelter. In 1993 a night shelter on Manvers Street was opened with the ability to house 18 people in dormitory style accommodation (reference needed). The charity has since expanded to include projects aimed at other vulnerable members of society.

In December 2007 BCHA formally changed its name to Julian House (the name of BCHA’s founding project)(reference needed).

In October 2012 the Manvers Street night shelter was, as a result of a £420,000 capital project, refurbished to include 20 individual sleeping quarters amongst other improvements such as upgraded medical facilities and a modern kitchen.(reference needed)
