London E19

[edit]

In April 2005, a local businessman started a campaign to have IG1 postcodes changed to London E19, on the pretext that IG1 is not recognised as a London postcode. He argued that so doing would help local businesses. A Royal Mail spokesman, however, said campaigners in Ilford had "virtually no hope" of changing their postcode.[3] This had previously been raised by the then GLC politician Serge Lourie in the 1970s and similarly rejected. Ilford had been removed from the London postal district in 1866.[4] This move has the opposite motives to a group in London SE2 who wish to have their postcode changed to adjacent DA7 citing higher insurance for their houses, belongings and cars as reason to change. Royal Mail said they have never changed the first part of a postcode for these reasons.[5]

Adjacent areas

[edit]

Clockwise from the east, the adjacent postcode areas are: RM (Romford), SE (London SE), E (London E), EN (Enfield), CM (Chelmsford). The southern boundary is the River Thames. Part of the western boundary is the North Circular Road and the River Roding.
