Evolutionary Explanations
[edit]The reason humans are susceptible to migraines is a debated topic. While most commonly fitness-impairing disorders die out due to natural selection, it still remains highly prevalent. Since genetics plays a roll in an individual’s vulnerability to migraines, it is subject to evolution. [1] This evidence supports the belief that migraines provide a survival or reproductive advantage. There are 5 different hypotheses for the evolutionary benefit of migraine headaches. [2]
- Defense mechanism
- Conflicts with other organisms
- Novel environmental factors
- Genetic harms and benefits
- Headache as a design construct
Using a evolutionary medicine perspective, new insight may be provided in the role of migraines. This could further lead to advances in its future treatment and prevention.
