Tableau Software (pronounced "ta-blo"), headquartered in Seattle, Washington, USA, has been a producer of software since it was founded in 2004 by Christian Chabot, Chris Stolte and Pat Hanrahan.
History
[edit]Started as a project in the United States Department of Defense (DOD) aimed at increasing people’s ability to analyze information by Stanford professor, Pat Hanrahan. Pat is a founding member of Pixar and later its chief architect for RenderMan.
Pat began work with Ph.D. scientist Chris Stolte and soon realized that data visualization could produce large gains in people’s ability to understand information. Rather than analyzing data in text form and then creating visualizations of those findings, Pat and Chris invented a technology called VizQL™.
While satisfying the DOD project, Pat and Chris met Christian Chabot. The three formed a company and spun out of Stanford. Christian became the company's CEO and was awarded “Product of the Year” by PC Magazine just one year after launch. Customers now number over 10,000 in 35 countries.
