[edit]Hashim ibn Abd Manaf had five sons: Abd al-Muttalib, Nadlah, Asad, Sayfi, and Abu Sayfi. Nadlah, Asad, and Abu Sayfi had issue, but only Abd al-Muttalib had surviving male-line descendants. Abd al-Muttalib had at least ten sons, including Abd Allah, Abu Talib, Abu Lahab, al-Muqawwam, al-Harith, Hamzah, and al-Abbas. Only four had surviving male-line descendants: Abu Talib, al-Abbas, al-Harith, and Abu Lahab.
Abu Talib had four sons - Ali, Ja'far, Aqil, and Talib - all of whom had issue except Talib. Ali married Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, and had two sons by her: Hasan and Husayn. The Hasanids and Husaynids, together comprising the Fatimid Alids (descendants of Ali and Fatimah), are the most prominent Hashimid lines of descent by virtue of their descent from Muhammad, for which reason they are referred to with the honorific titles sharif (pl. ashraf or shurafa') and sayyid (pl. sadat). Ali had sons through other wives as well, three of whom produced surviving male lines: Muhammad, al-Abbas, and Umar.
